Beach cruiser build

Are the three items separately constructed? If you aren’t using them I may be interested in the under seat tray. I don’t recall anyone selling a finished product like that. I’d guess they were one off made by someone.

it looks as thought they were made as a set and quite nicely thought out.

I do want to keep them for a future build but could easily make some butcher paper templates off them and send them your way.

Seeing this flat rear idea does remind me of the horrible flat seat idea which came with my last project bike. You have to wonder, didn't they fore see any rear wheel travel interfering with that low flat plane ?

Haha... I fix problems created by others for a living... I gave up on trying to figure out what the last guy was thinking a long time ago!

Well progress is pretty slow but I started to make a little headway on the paint.

got the hubs and rims prepped (soda blasted and sanded) and color coated, still need to clear them (hopefully tomorrow).

shot them with a DTM 2k primer - Dark Silver Metallic then Heavy Specialty Silver.

And a dirty mock up of what’s kinda planned.

The stock seat is too wide at the hips so at some point I’ll build a new seat pan - pretty much the same outline but just not as wide.

As for the tank - I got a long ways to go on it - seems to be sufficient space for mounting but gotta make some brackets to mount the front to or weld on some posts to work with the front motor mounts on the frame. I’ll sleep on it for a while and figure out the best course of action.

And the tank came from an eBay seller RoyalChoppers based in India. I had a line on a real tank but it didn’t end up being in a useable state (waaaay to far gone) so I thought I’d give one of these repop tanks a shot.

The good - seems pretty solid, beefy welds. - and it was pretty cheap. Was initially 260- they accepted a 230 offer and I was refunded 30 bucks because of well the bad haha. So $200 bucks for the tank, rack, gas cap and 2 taps.

The bad - pretty rough in terms of finish - bit lumpy/bumpy and some heavy grind marks at the knee wells. Nothing that can’t be sorted out but just a little more work to do. - all the threads were coated in primer and had to be chased.

All in all - it’ll work out just fine. If it was goin on a show bike I’d send it back for a refund.

once my painted parts are cleared, I’ll start lacing up the rims- get some tires mounted and make it a roller so I can easily get it into a bigger work space across the property.

What pipes are those? Any clearance issues with the kicker or dipstick?

the pipes I got from DogBunny - he had them built. He may be able to chime in with a little more info.

as to the clearance issues - it will require an early 70-73 style kick start. And I think I will be able to get it dialed in so the dip stick clears too. - if it doesn’t clear I was thinking of fabricating a flexible dip

Well finished up the rims and hubs.

This isn’t going to be a show bike and I’m not gonna spend my weekends cleaning it but I would like it to look nice and hold up well.

3 coats of clear and I’m pretty happy with the depth of color. Much better than the set I had powder coated a few months back, but in all fairness I kinda live in a no mans land. I have 2 powder coasters about an hour away and both do terrible work (as I learned).

And started to do a dirty mock up of my bars. Just to see how things would flow and fit.

The grips were from yamahaxs650.com if any one else is lookin at picking them up, I’d pass. They feel like they are made of abs plastic. Everything else I’ve purchased there seems top notch though.

Well it’s finally a roller - enough so I could get it over to another shed with some space to work on it.

Still a lot of mock up and figment to do but at least I got a little more of the vision together.

Proportions seem to look and feel right although it is just slapped together at the moment and the seat size is kinda growing on me but my gut still says build one narrower

Anyone know what spec is on wheel run out??

if I can get em within .02 on these old guys I’m usually pretty happy. (Excluding the bump at the weld)

these clocked in at about .015 which to be honest I was quite surprised.

and if it’s helpful to anyone in the future... spokes came from yamahaxs650 - they fit nicely and came with 2 extras or each spoke in case you screw a few up or need to replace in the future for some reason.

.015 per side seems extremely good. A guy could maybe play and get even better, but why? After the tire is mounted and fully inflated do a recheck and fine tune further if needed from there? Lookin So good!

I do recheck em, especially since I didn’t mount the tire. I’m not sure what force went into getting the tire on, although they were done at a reputable shop and the rims have no visual signs of force. You just never know...

when I do recheck em I like to do it once it’s mounted on the bike so it’s dialed in as it’s gonna ride and be true to the bike itself.

on this bike in particular I’ll probably recheck em a third time after the first few times taking it off road. I’d bet they will settle in and shift a good bit and need a final tune up.

Ok so I’ve run into a little bit of a snag when mounting up my dual discs.

It seem the front wheel sits about .050 further to 1 side than the other.

Now that doesn’t seem to be any real concern to me BUT it does mean that one disc sits to the inside of the caliper and has a slight rub and the other sits to the outside and has a slight rub.

this can be easily solved if I run a little thicker shims on one side and a little thinner ones on the other (currently they both have shims that measure .245)

the forms are an 81 and the wheels are in pretty sure 74.

I’ve ran both the axle and speedo gear from the 74 and the ones off the 81 and it seems to make no difference where things line up (although the speedo gears do measure .100 different on their retaining sections where they contact the fork stop but bodies measure the same distance and that’s what seems important)

the axles themselves seem to be slightly different too but they both seem to end up in the same place when it’s all said and done.

is there something glaring obvious that I’m missing here or is it just a simple fix of adding .050 to one side and taking it away from the others?

first photo is the right side (when sitting on the bike) second photo is the left.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
