hey guys so ive got a 79 motor thats been sat outside with out an alternator cover on for a while. to the eye the stator looks alright but wanted to know if theres any way of testing it without the engine running? ive just had 5 months off work after a crash so would rather not be spending any money i dont have to.

thanks guys

Do you have a manual? The manuals have the procedure to test the stator and rotor for shorts with an ohm meter.

Welcome to the forum, Scott

The stator has 4 wires. 3 white and 1 yellow. Use your ohmmeter on the lowest scale. White to white should be about 0.5 ohms. White to yellow should be about 0.25 ohms. Your meter leads also have resistance which you have to compensate for, so connect the 2 meter leads together and see what they read.
If the meter leads read 0.7 ohms as an example, a white to white reading of 1.2 ohms is actually 0.5 ohms.

Also measure from any of the white leads to the stator steel frame. It should measure a very high resistance.
