Hey people, long time reader, first time poster. I'm looking to wire up my bike and the guy before me did a number on the harness so I've decided to scrap it and start from scratch. I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos on it and reading as many diagrams as possible however I'm pretty new to all this and it's a bit hard to understand. I found a great video from greeters garage on chopper wiring in 10 minutes and it seems to be the most straight forward and easiest to follow along to however it's directed at people wiring up a harley sportster. My question is would this be able to be transfered to the xs650 platform, or what would be missing in order to wire it correctly? Here's a link to the video in question for reference:

What are you intending to run on your bike, lights, indicators, charging circuit type, ignition type, clocks, accessories?

The video is ok for general background but don't use zip ties to hold the fuse block in place. You are better than that.
Also he dosen't mention that the ground connection needs to be clean, free of rust and paint.
I stopped watching after he was starting to explain the wiring of the coils but as to it being useful for XS 650s not really but as I said background info.
When using diagrams I try and get an A3 print and just go 1 wire at a time.
A multimeter is useful for working out switch positions and checking other things.
There are plenty of diagrams on this forum that have been vetted by the wiring experts here, find one that suits and use that.

The goal is as simple as possible for my brain. Headlight, tail light, ignition and charging. It's my first bike and first attempt at wiring so I'm trying to keep it as simple and straightforward as possible. The wiring harness i was given for the bike came hacked up and unlabeled and a lot of it just doesn't line up

There are a bunch of different diagrams on this site. I used this one for my chopper project with the wires from my stock harness. I'm not an electrical expert but I got all my lights to work and the starter to go vroom without blowing anything up. That part was easy, the charging systems and ignition were/ are a little harder and differ depending what year of bike you have. Mine has points and a stock charging system, you might have something else but I think that this diagram has most of the variables covered. These guys can figure it out just post pictures and use the reply button when responding. Post a pic of your project, maybe it will inspire me to go work on mine.

Alright started pulling things apart to wire things up and ran across this instead of the points I expected 🙃 anyone give me some advice on what the difference is and will it be able to be run kick only? What am I dealing with here? First build and no experience previously so humor me and be kind 😅

That's a pamco ignition. Original pamcos were good. He stopped making them when he was reverse engineered, and they were not as reliable.

He also built an e-advance to go with the ignition. If the mechanical advance, (opposite side of the motor under the chrome cap), is missing look for an oblong blue box.

Read the warnings in this link when it comes to running the power through the new loom if using a cap and PMA.

I have this one bookmarked, as someday I will have to wire my bike again from scratch. Until then, I plan and am trying to draw out my own wiring diagram for what I want to run.

Edit: you'd mentioned something about kick only. That is one of the things mine will be. I have a capacitor from TC bros, and a HHB PMA kit. Not sure if any of that is relevant to your setup.
