Blue or black? (Repainting tins)

Well, it's been a long time since I started this thread shortly after acquiring the dead XS650D for resuscitation.

Anyway, I decided in the end to keep the bike in it's standard colours. It's presently being resprayed by a trusted painting guy. Gold looks very flat and pale here but it's the lighting. Should have this stuff back in the next couple of weeks. Then it should be all systems go on the back from the dead 650D. I hope.

I decided if I want a different colour scheme in the future I'll buy another set of tins and have them painted to suit. I can't say I like the standard USA 1977 Bountiful Blue colour scheme really. I think it's probably the colour I like least in the entire XS650 production run.

Such a personal choice, colours.

Euro 76C Brilliant Red
Euro 77D Silver/black
Mailmans XS2 in Brilliant Red XS1 scheme
Oceania 76C brilliant red
Indeed. So I decided on the stock blue/gold. I'm minded to look out for another tank and side panels for a change of colour.

1977 XS650D stock color, not blue.

I do like most of the colors but I like the simple graphics of the 78 and 79. The 77 was still pretty simple. The earlier schemes were selling flash and pizzazz that fell hollow against the performance of the Z1, CB750, GS750... my take.

Whenever someone tries to compare the XS650 to Honda's 750/4 I always think of how it competed in the Castrol 6 hour race. Sure the Honda won and lapsed it 3 times for a 4klm win after 6 hours of solid racing.

Production bikes off the showroom floor.

In the first 10 placings the XS2 came in second and 9th

Bikes are only as good as their riders
