Has anyone here used one of these B B ignitionkits on a rephased motor ? i dont see an option from them. If you have what modifications to the unit need to be done? thanks in advance Harry
I have not done one. I am familiar with BB ignitions and rephased ignitions.
.
It has been done years ago in Australia on a belt driven cam 270 /90 XS 650. It looked to me to be more about engineering than practicality.
To make a unit that will fit in the stock points enclosure you need to use one modified sender and pick up.
The magnets on the stock sender are 180 degrees apart. One will need moving to suit the desired rephase angle.
One pick up on the circuit board will also need repositioning. You will need 2 ignitor boxes, 2 coils.
Honestly I would do this experimentation when you can buy a 277/83 igniton and alternator off the shelf from Vape or an ignition only from Heiden tuning. Although you may find doing what is required easy.
I have used with Vape and they are a quality unit, I have no experiance with the Heiden ignition and cannot comment. https://www.heidentuning.com/xs650-...gh-performance-277-degree-rephase-detail.html
I already had a Boyer when I rephased back in 2007 and ended up just using 2 of them. One pickup on the left and the second on the right end of the cam. Don't see any other way one would work properly.

There is another good thing about two independent ignition systems. If one fails you can ride home with just one cylinder. Not fast but it can be done. Did that a few years ago...
New to me high compression Norton has a Boyer that's been on it for decades. Stock coils, Motor cold, 40F, I can barely kick it through ONE cylinder. But with new plugs, it's starting right up. Darn near started when I turned the key on!!!!! Gave a healthy chuff.
If you plan on removing the stock alternator, then it should be possible to fabricate some kind of custom, crank mounted ignition setup, based on Boyer or other availble components.
ArticXS it is totally possible to make a crank fired ignition. Check out Jims thread on points to GN 250 ignition.
Team Junk and Jim did the heavy lifting, and thanks to them I have been able to make standard and 277 rephased (total loss) ignitions for race engines. http://www.xs650.com/threads/points-to-gn250-electronic-ignition-conversion.58083/page-4
My input is from post #73.
