I just set my cam chain tension per the manual and set my valves also. I figured it'd be harder than it was. Maybe I did something wrong. To set the cam chain I just removed that cap, loosened the jam nut and turned in the adjuster til it was flush with the thing inside it. Is that right?

I set the intake valves to .004 and the exhaust to .006. It's really quiet now and seems to run smoother. I likey! :thumbsup:
 
yes that's right. the thing inside is what is in contact with the cam chain. when it becomes flush stop there, you don't want to put too much tension on the chain and stretch it

when it's all tuned up it is a pretty smooth bike. a little off here and there will make it vibrate like crazy
 
- except that you should take the lhs casing off so you can turn the motor counterclockwise by hand-this tensions the cam chain properly before adjustment
- also aids the next step in finding tdc, together with a straw, to adjust the valves
 
- the problem with using the kickstart is that you have less control over crank rotation...you dont want any clockwise movement at all before adjusting the camchain as this takes the tension off it :twocents::smoke:
 
well how the heck to i measure .004 and .006?! or is that where i have to get those skinny little metal thingies? dammit another tool to buy... :thumbsdown:
 
Yeah you need feeler gauges. They are only like 5 bucks at a parts store. Make sure you read the sizes and buy one that goes to .004.
 
Hey, Inked, not to hijack, but did I see your bike outside Spelman? With a bottle opener on the neck (just like my dream girl)?
 
Setting the cam chain tension that way works ok.
A better way is to do it with the engine warmed up and idling. Set the adjuster so the inner rod moves in and out 1-2 mm. On the outward stroke of the movement it should just come flush with the adjuster.
Doing it this way sets the tension at operating temp and while the parts are running. A much more accurate method. Often setting it cold and stopped can be too tight or loose while running at temp. This can cause more wear on the parts.
You should check your cam chain often. This keeps the engine quiet, The ignition and valve timing right, less vibration.
I like to do it when I change the oil. Check the valve settings and ignition timing too.
