Carb options for Redline XS650

I like your thinking, Skull. Tilting the motor forward puts the heavy head and camshaft down enough to make steering much more linear. Raising the rear does much, but they had it right with the Ascot TT. It's too bad that Yamaha didn't do something like it when the old twin was still selling well. As it was, the Ascot project came along too late.

I decided to order a set of the Mikuni TM34 carbs and an intake manifold kit from Motogadgets. The single bellcrank and choke are very appealing, and user feed back seems good.

Price wasn't too bad considering the U.S. dollar to Euro excahnge rate and no VAT.

I'll sort out air filters once I get the carbs fitted.

Check K&N snowmobile filters. The filtration material is the same as those listed for mortorcycles, and some are angled, giving a bit of clearance. I used a pair of angled K&Ns for some years with VM36s. Like any foam or fiber pod, rain will choke K&Ns and make the motor run richer than Gates. Outerwears rain covers keep pods dry even in a serious frog strangler without causing detectable restriction. The K&N catalogue lists Outerwears rain covers for some filters, but if the ones you choose aren't there, Outerwears will make a custom pair with surprising speed for a surprisingly low price.

For installation instructions, go here: www.amckayltd.com/vm34-36.pdf.

Those are 4-stroke pumpers at a helluva low price! Excellent choice. Effects of component changes are so tightly isolated in the Radial Smoothbore design group that those 34s belong to that dialing them in is almost a leisurely straight line stroll upstream. Congrats!

Ignore that link on VMs, there's not much of use to you there. A copy of the Sudco Mikuni Tuning Manual will give you lots of useful tips in the HS, HRS, and SR sections. IMO period correctness only counts in vintage racing and shows. Again, congrats!

The TM34's arrived yesterday and I test fitted them today. No interference issues and I'm fairly confident I've identified some K&N filters that will be plug-and-play.

They are a bit busy looking compared to individual VM's, but I don't mind for the convenience of a single throttle cable, fuel line and choke.

I'll loop back to this thread when I sort out the air filters.

Befre ordering air filteres, I wanted to check the TM34 intake diameter to verify the dimension (D) shown in the earlier posted chart is correct. My dial calipers show the intake diameter is 54.8mm which is about 3mm smaller than the 58mm shown in that chart. This impacts air filter selection, so I'm glad I did that. I've updated my earlier post that included the chart with dimensions to note this.

Due the Redline frame configuration, it looks like I'm pretty limited as to K&N air filters that will fit. Although the K&N web-site search tool is kind of lousy, so it's possible I missed some options.

I've ordered a couple of K&N RC-0981 tapered oval filters that I'm fairly confident will fit. On sale from Speed Addicts for about $100/pair + sales tax and free shipping.
