I'm building a catch can for the TX, to be mounted dirlectly under the right side pancake filter. It'll have a pancake filter welded on top, same diameter as the catch can, just topped with a beaten and polished ally top to match the carb filters. Can will be painted gloss black, same as the bike, and mounted using a polished aluminium bracket.

It holds 250ml, that's filled to the top of course, but around 125ml to the bottom of the breather pipe.

I've got most of it done: Two holey baffles tacked inside the 57mm tube, bottom capped and breather inlet exiting under the lower baffle. I stick welded this one, so I didn't have to spend the whole day chasing pin holes from the mig (flux core). I've still got to weld a spigot on the bottom for emptying the oil.

Undecided on the top construction: I'm intending on putting a stainless pot scrubber on top of the top baffle,, but undecided on making it a sealed unit by welding a plate on top over the scrubber, or, welding a ring on top and drilling and tapping some holes in the ring to screw on an aluminium plate that will double as the base of the filter.

So, It'll have two baffles topped with a stainless scrubber baffle and then a foam filter topping the catch can.

Has anyone built one of these before? Is there any point in a removable top? Will welding the top cap on affect (burn) the stainless pot scourer underneath.

I used one of these on my Harley Road King because I didnt like venting the crankcase pressure back into the intake tract.

It has a drain built into the bottom of it, but I really never get anything out of it when I drain it...maybe a trace?

Nearly finished, rushed it a bit to see if it looked ok, happy with the result, so of course I have to make a neater one! Almost unnoticeable!

My sporty...ran dual vent hoses, each from head to street 3/8" hoses. No more oil leaks. They don't drip hardly nothing.

They ran better when they used a rotaryvalve breather in the WL 45's. - part of the scavenger pump, and yes, it was timed.

I have made one, not for an XS but a V Max.
Rather than a catch tank it was intended as an air/ oil seperator with the fumes being fed back into the inlet system and oil back into the crankcase via the filler plug. I used an interference fit for the end caps.
Crankcase fumes enter at the central pipe, oil collects ant the bottom where it can drain back into via the pipe on the side to the crankcase and fumes continue up to exit at the top. The central part is filled with (if memory serves well) with a pan scourer.

Depending on how much blow-by an engine has it may be necessary to add a restrictor on the drain-back pipe so that the gasses find it easier to go via the separator.

I worked well on the Max but can't say how well it would work on an XS.

Made another one. Had to be smaller to fit just above the swing arm, behind the gear box. Blowby gasses enter via tube halfway up and and are directed downward where any oil collects. Air is cleaned as it goes up through four drilled plates, then enters another section stuffed with stainless steel scrubber. Air exits via a pipe at the top and exits via a filter between the two carb pancake filters. There is a tube attached at the bottom leading to a tap under the swingarm for emptying.
The catch can is is mounted to the rear engine mounts via a couple of rubber grommets with T nuts to stop the grommets from being squished too much.
