I'm buying new sprockets and chain 17x30. How many links chain would be the correct fit 100 or 102 or other?

to fit A? .......normally your stock lenght will work ok and since chain usually comes with extra lenght it's easier to just slide the wheel forward and cut it, you will need 3/4 to 1 1/8 inch free play in the chain with shocks 3/4 with a hard tail

- if you reduce the sprocket by 4 teeth, thats fine but can you be sure those 4 teeth are going to be within the chain contact area?

- i would be more tempted to remove 2 links, assuming the chain contacts half the sprocket

- however, once the sprocket is in place, lay the old chain and count the overlap

no it doesn't work that way, it's the circumference of the sprocket that's different... divided by top and bottom run ... put the chain on the bike and then cut it.. much easier
