Charging Issues. -1980 xs650 special-help

When I first hold probes on rotor it says 1.7. but goes down as I hold on. - I think other wire is other end of safety wire perhaps - new installed rotor says 5.5. meter resistance is .3

OK, your original rotor is toast. If you send it to me, I'll make it new again.

That yellow wire is actually just sun bleached blue. Peel the black sheath back and you'll see the blue. That's the neutral switch. Nothing to do with charging.

The headlight won't get power until the charging system trips the safety relay. The safety relay is actually 2 relays; one kills the starter when the alternator starts charging and the other sends power along to the headlight circuit. When you're not charging, the light will not come on... that's the way it's designed.
-------------------------------------------

'K... at this point we've done and checked everything in the charging system. Since I'm at a loss here, let's start back at the beginning. Reinstall ALL the original components EXCEPT the rotor. You said it ohmed out at 1.2, so lets leave it out.

So, original reg/rec, original stator and original everything else you might have messed with. Make it as much as before this started as you can. Run it and tell us what happens.

Also, can you post a pic of the original rotor showing the 1.2Ω?
Jim, assume the issue with power to headlight is different than on my ‘78 and earlier models - because I can get power to headlight anytime. I didn’t study the wiring for this year model but thanks for pointing it out should I ever need this :)

Long as we have magnetism, we have the ability to generate voltage. No, that's not an issue. That's why I said to leave it on the bike. Everything else, return it to original and we'll start over. Obviously, we missed something the first go around.

yes it did - but no headlight indicator on panel and no headlight low or hi - could I just need new headlight at this point - maybe not because o don't think I am getting power to the connector

No to be clear it is still chagrinning 14v at 4k rpms. but no headlight out indicator and when I checked unplugged with meter while running connector had no power

Since we're talking over each other, go back to hitting the reply button so we know what's being responded to. I don't know where we're at right now.

Does it still charge when you plug the headlight back in?

Did you hook the yellow wire back up on the stator?

just the regulator -- the eBay stator is on there and I kind of feel like I should not mess with it - can I just take the braket in photo out and run wires under there for eBay one that is installed or do you think I should put original back on also old regulator is plugged in but not installed kind of hoping to plug new one since it is installed on bike in and try but I will do what ever you suggest - oh and I borrowed that battery - so eventually I will have to give it back- but right now it seems good correct just missing headlight indicator- now I am scared to breathe on it
