I am gradually rebuilding an '83 XS650 heritage special. While installing new clutch springs and TC brothers hex head retainer screws I managed to strip one of the threads in the clutch boss. Probably from too much torque. I now know that it should be 5-8 ft. lbs.

I tried using a M7 tap to re-thread the hole and that stripped as well (see image below).

Should I just get a new clutch boss at this point? I'm hesitant to go up another size to M8 because it also requires boring out the retainer screw from TC bros.

Not wanting to start an argument over what is the best insert to use I will just suggest using a thread insert.
The type I use (Helicoil) needs a drill around 7mm for the 6 mm insert. So you should be ok.
If that doesn't work then get another clutch boss.

I did not know about thread inserts. Thank you I will try that.
