Looking at buying a spare clutch cable for my US spec 1977 XS650D, original handle bars and lever. Seems that part number 447-26335-00-00 is listed in different places with two lengths. Yamaha one is available in the UK but prohibitively expensive. I have found both 125cm and 150cm lengths offered. I'm 90% certain I need the longer one. But if I'm wrong that's a big difference in cable length to accommodate. If anyone can confirm to me that it is the longer one that's correct, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

(Yes, I know I should have measured it before I refitted the one I have, just one of those things).

So, answering my own question. Heiden Tuning list 125cm and 150cm clutch cables. I asked Heiden Tuning what cable length they recommend for a stock US import 650D. They said 125cm was correct.

This morning I received the cable and mounted it with cable ties alongside the fitted cable. It's too short by ~11cm. So neither 125cm nor 150cm fit my bike. I've asked Heiden Tuning what they want me to do because it seem neither of their clutch cables will fit my bike.

I'll have to carry on looking. Picture -

Your only an inch shy of 150cm that can’t possibly be a problem, why wouldn’t you just go with the 150cm assuming the cable you have fits fine? If you are really fussy you can get custom cables made, I think motion pro still offers this service

I've ordered a MOTION PRO 05-0013. Cross references to the correct Yamaha part number. If this one doesn't look correct, I'll bite the bullet and buy a genuine Yamaha one. 3x the price of the Motion Pro cable so we'll see how it goes.
AFAIK, the Motion Pro XS650 clutch cable fits all. That means it fits the Special. I have them on my Specials with stock pullbacks and mini apes. The fit is perfect. You’re going to have to deal with a bit of extra length.

Ah yes, you're right. The Motion Pro website doesn't list XS650S as a different model. I will see how it fits. Before ordering I checked with the seller that it was right. If it's too long they can have it back. Not easy to find a way to lose more than a few mm of excess clutch cable on the 650 Yamaha. Picture -

Yamaha made two different length clutch cables and throttle cables, the longer ones being for the Special model. But the difference in length was only an inch or two, not 10 inches, lol. You may have a Special cable fitted now, and that 125mm Heiden cable may be the correct Standard cable.

How are you routed at the top? Does the cable run down the right or left side of the steering neck? Stock routing with the correct cable was down the left side. I run lower Euro bars so I route mine down the right side of the neck to help absorb the extra length generated by the lower bars.

A bit more on the saga of my too short clutch cable from Heiden Tuning. I'm pretty convinced the cable sent to me is for a UK/Europe bike with narrower and flatter handle bars than a USA spec bike.

While regasketing the starter motor gear train cover, took the opportunity of routing the shorter cable to the left of the headstock, instead of the right side. I'd expected the clutch lever pull to be heavier given the tighter bend radius.

Happily, that hasn't come to pass and the lever pull is fine. So I've oiled the cable and left it installed. I can't see an obvious problem with the revised cable routing. Pictures -
