Hi guys I have 78 xs 650 standard I had the clutch sticking killing the motor with the clutch in get freed up working good a week later same thing. I did change oil before this it sat for two years and it wasn’t stuck after that cleaned the worm gear there is a one piece clutch rod as well there is 20k on the bike will the cutch have to be taken apart and cleaned. Thanks jim

My bike does that too. My work around is to roll down my driveway clutch in, then shift into 2nd.
That breaks the plates loose, back to first and off I go.

If the cable, worm gear and pushrods are moving freely, I would pop off the tight case cover and have a look - meaning disassembly. It’s pretty easy to do. Clean everything up, inspect for wear and reassemble and adjust. I’d replace the friction plates if get look or measure to be worn.

What oil are you using and where are you located?

Using 20w50 non synthetic oil located in east central South Dakota I had replaced the sump plate gasket and it sat for a week or two after that it was the clutch was stuck freed it up and a week later it was the same way. Not sure if the clutch basket has wear ridges keep the plates from separating

I’d imagine it’s cold where you are. 20w50 in cold temps will cause your plates to drag. Ridges on the basket may cause erratic operation, but if the plates were hanging up on ridges that badly, I would think you wouldn’t be able to squeeze the lever.
