So i looked and can not find an answer, maybe someone knows and can clarify this for me?
So i picked up a 81 basket case, putting back together now. PO has installed points setup, but it only has one coil ( duel plugs coming out) I thought that a points system used two coils? So would it fire as a waste spark system? Or damage anything?
Also what kind of kick stand should I use? It had a harley bolt on, but I had to remove to install engine and it will not bolt back in.
Thank you for any advice on my dilemma.
I am glad to be back with a few xs650s in my quiver. I was away for awhile raising a daughter, getting divorced, getting lost in the sauce and crawling back to a confident standing position again. Will share more pics when I get her running IMG_9859.jpegIMG_9766.jpeg

That looks like an original newer TCI coil (factory electronic ignition). It may work but it has a low (3 ohms) primary resistance and that will burn the points up fast. Points require about a 5 ohm primary resistance coil (or coils).

You could use that coil with a ballast resister wired into the power to the coil. This changes the coil to what people referred to as a 6 volt coil. The resistors were used on early '70's Plymouths and are still available. Kinda cheap if I remember right, but kinda big. They look like a hunk of ceramic, about 3-1/2" long.

Edit....look your bike over, you may have that ballast resistor already onboard.

I found no resistor/ but did find a set of stock points coils with condenser on top motor mount , so swapping that on today. Having trouble with fabbing up a mount for the coils. Made one for where horn goes and coils hit on oil tube on head. Would like to put them where single coil mounts. Maybe sideways to fit. Thank you for the help

The original coil mounts were a flat plate attached to the bottom of that angled frame brace tube that your single coil mounts are attached to the top of .....

Maybe you could make a couple angle mounts that bolt to your single coil mount, one on each side?
