Complete Bike Rebuild?? Worth it?

Well, im about to start pulling stuff, plan on taking a bunch of pictures and got about 100 sandwich bags. Ive got an ultrasonic cleaner coming on thursday and plan on trying to salvage what i can from the fasteners etc, also plan on disassembling the carbs and throwing them in there.

Wish me luck. Ill probably start a new thread soon w it from beginning to end.

What’s up with the bike? Inquiring minds want to know.
Hey bushy, sorry for disappearing, one of my brothers had a lifesaving surgery and then not long after he started to recover one of my really good friends and coworkers is in icu with potential paralysis so life got a bit crazy for a minute.

As far as the bike goes i just started slowly pulling everything off on Sunday, only got the tank off because of a few reasons.

1) I didn’t have the solution for my ultrasonic cleaner (ended up going with simple green pro hd which they say is safe for aluminum)

2) I’m debating taking the engine apart as much as possible while its still on the frame, I’m getting mixed search results but am leaning towards taking it out then working on it.

3) i am unsure if i should take the wiring harness off first - leaning towards a no on that too

Tomorrow and thursday i have off so i plan on hitting it pretty hard, i’m hoping to have it down to the frame so i can get it to the powder coater.

Also does anyone have experience with cartridge emulators? I want a bit more in the suspension but would like to keep the classic aesthetic, i have some progressives the PO gave me but I’m hesitant to actually throw that in there

I have experience with emulators. First, they don’t play well with progressive springs. You’ll need to buy some straight rate springs at the outset.

Sorry for the miscommunication, if i do the emulators i plan on sending them to a shop to have it done as it seems difficult, the alternative is to use the progressives i already have. How do you like them?

I do like them. They are an improvement over stock, but there are always limitations. The fork diameter necessitates a fork brace if you’re looking for a sporty ride. Then you’ll notice the unsprung weight as well. So, at some point you have to decide it’s good enough or you’ll spend yourself all the way to a new bike. Yes, the difference is noticeable.

Break the torque on The nuts on top of the engine before you remove it.
This indeed made life significantly easier. I have everything off except the clutch cable and the ground wire, the little screw on the ground is threatening to strip so i’m going to snag a little jewelers kit from work tomorrow when i go in.

I also pulled the carbs and plan on running them through the ultrasonic cleaner, compressed air through all the holes and doing a complete rebuild, will ref @Bushyeyed1 forum to remember which jets to buy.

If anyone knows where to source good fastener replacements, almost all of them are pretty corroded, ill see how running them through the ultrasonic cleaner works but i think a lot of them are well past saving.

Next move is to drop the engine so i can start working on the top end rebuild, pulling the wiring harness (I’ll eventually redo those 40 year old things but i’m procrastinating), and bring the frame to the powder coater. going to go with a black low gloss frame and ill paint the tank myself (leaning towards blue or green, unsure though.

Decided i will revert back to the black seat busy had on.

Things to order as of now:

Gasket set
Fasteners for damn near everything
Jets/needles

I’ve used a kit from Alloy Boltz. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. It is NOT JIS.
Thanks for the link. Had heard of these before, but just checked them out for XS and XT kits, as well as for individual fasteners. Gonna be shopping for some bling soon!

This is a ground wire right? do i need to take the crankcase cover off, i know i will to get the clutch cable off, but the screw securing the wire is freely spinning, which leads me to believe it’s bolted in from the other side? Ill check it out later today if no answers

Got the fasteners from alloy boltz, and have to say these guys look amazing, im excited to put them on, only like 27$ shipped to hawaii for the whole bike!!

got the rear wheel off but struggling with removing the chain masterlink, do i need a chain breaker tool or has anyone got any diy tips?

Will the front cam chain sprocket need to come off if i want to take a look at the lower unit?

Got the chain off, tried a punch, didn’t want to buy the breaker tool so decided i needed a new one anyways so i grinded it off, there was probably a better way but oh well, i had fun.

All thats left is figuring out how to get the alternator off, i could disconnect the wires from the alternator and drop the engine with it, but im trying to figure out a way to remove the shift shaft chain guard so i can take the alternator off and leave the wires connected (figure it might make the new harness a little easier plus its gotta come off sooner or later)

I'm not too sure I understand the problem with taking the alternator off? Piccies?
