After over 60 years of family ownership, I thought it’s about time to treat the lake water at our cottage to make it safe to drink. We currently carry drinking / cooking water from home and it’s a pita.

With advice from my neighbour (experts in water purification), I made up a small system that will treat all the water at our cottage. We’ll be heading up there in a couple of weeks to install and test it.

It’s basically a 10 micron sediment filter and a UV sterilizer. Pretty simple but should be effective. I built it at home, attached to a marine plywood base. Two quick connections and I should be in business.

I'm in the same boat, however we don't have to bring the water from home; there is a hillside spring on the road to the cottage that flows vigorously all year long from which we fill water jugs. Beautiful, clear, cold almost sweet-tasting water free for the taking!

Interesting….looks small and efficient. And its design would trap and or kill any micro organisms present in the surface water?

Lucky you. Have you tested it for Beaver Fever?

According to my neighbour, a 10 micron sediment filter would be fine for capturing the majority of nasty bits. The 5 micron I bought (it’s just a filter cartridge) is just a bit of insurance. He said that there are some parasites that are 2 micron in size and can’t be trapped by the filter. Actually a 1 micron filter might do it, but would restrict flow. Then adding the UV sterilizer, anything that got past the filter would be zapped. He gave me a bunch of test kits so I can see if the system is working.
