I'am new to this forum, last week I bought a 1978 XS-650 SE steet tracker. In the process of checking it over I noticed the top dbl. breather had two hoses going down past the swing arm, they are both wide open , no filters. My question is should I run filters or the brake booster check valve ? I saw Mike's XS has a reed valve system. What are you guys running on your bikes ?

I run two of the Power Brake Booster Check Vavles on my '77D. They plugged right into the existing stock hoses and ended up on top of the K&Ns. Long hose should be fine but check vavles or filters would be better. The filters can be nothing more than a simple sock you make up yourself. Check valves have an advantage if your bike leaks oil.

Ditto, but I like the reed valve from Mike's. Little mini-cone filters from your local auto parts store make nice little collectors for what gets exhaled.

MikesXS and 650 Central both carry breather filters that can be attached to the crankcase vent hoses, or the booster check valves. TeeCat is right, though -- you can most likely find equivalents at a reasonably well stocked auto parts store.
