It seems like the last person didn't use sealer on case or on head. Is it ok to use no sealer. These case halfs were on together real tight without it. I got some sealer but don't know if I should be using it.

I use Permatex Grey.

We used a modified 518 on the NEON, et al. engines.
All 1.8/2.0/2.4's had a heat cured 518 variant for block to bedplate sealing.
Reason was to avoid "shimming" when bedplate was placed and not torqued right away. Same with line stoppage before nut runners torqued bedplate.
Partial cure until first heat cycle, then full cure.

You are welcome chrysler

Looks like I got a lot of replys. Thx. I bought a jb grey gasket sealer before I posted. It does say silicone based but the yamabond says that too. I guess most expensive is the loctite 518. Don't know if I should get it instead now. I just feel crazy putting loctite red on anything you might take apart again but I guess its sealer here and not the real loctite red. I put loctite red on a timing chain sprocker screw on a 400 and it was real hard to get apart using a torch. What's easiest to take apart? Like I'm really afraid of dropping the timing chain or something and having to resplit cases then having them stuck too much. I guess I'll use a rag so nothing falls in. It's crazy that you have to split the cam chain and do a master link. On a 400 you don't have to split the chain to get the cam on.

You don't have to split the chain from what I've read here. You can slip the cam thru the chain and then bearings on (or take the bearings out and then slip the cam thru).

I tryed taking off the bearing to not break the chain but there still was not enough room. it's a 1977 maybe on other years? It seems like I saw a video of them just taking off bearings but in other videos everyone broke the chain even grinding off the master link. we had to dremel grind it apart. Maybe there is 2 different chain lengths? Anyhow it's gonna be hard getting it together since it was so tight.

From years of building VW motors, I prefer using Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gask #3. Cool part about using it, if the case seal or anything is a tight tolerance, when you pull the parts apart, I have found the Permatex never hardened. Easy to clean up with brake cleaner BTW.
