Ok. Since I installed the big bore kit to make it a 750 I have been trying to get the carbs dialed in and it been a struggle. With that said I recently changed plugs based on a set up I saw on here but they didn't have the exact same plug but I used one that crossed over. This gave me two new plugs which unveiled a strange problem that I can't explain. So like I said I have been trying to dial in the carbs so I have been riding awhile stopping unscrewing the tops of the mikuni vm34's and moving the clip then when I get threw all 5 groves on the jet needle I pull the carbs off and lower the pilot jet and start over . The problem I have been having is I seem good at the first 1/4 throttle and at work but the middle 1/2 half seems to studder or spudder , I'm not really sure how to describe it but it doesn't surge. I seem to have better luck going leaner but at some point it started idling bad and seemed to lean.i pulled the plugs and they were white so I went back up a size.incidentally I had to jump a size because I didn't have them and had to order them 35's pilot.i have them in now and have started the riding process.heres the baffling problem I'm having . When I pulled the plugs today after riding to the cruise in one was black and the other was like new. Wha? I get it home and check spark fuel and compression. I have spark at both plugs, fuel to both carbs but not sure how to check if it is actually getting to the cylinder. And I have compression . 150 on the one that appears brand new and 100 on the cylinder that is black. I will post some pics . Is it possible that I and burning so clean on the cylinder that has 150 that it looks new? I wouldn't think so. It does seem to run as good as it has been. Has anyone seen this before. I will post picks of both sets of plugs and also the exhaust. I just put 12 inch baffles in and the nut on the end of one is black and the other is a lot cleaner. Yes the correspondence with the plugs.

the difference in compression is massive. make sure you are measuring it correctly. Use a guage that screws in, throttle wide open when measuring compression. make sure you ground the plugs on the engine if you are using electric start

WOW! Thanks for the comment. I decided to check some things again and to pop the valve covers off just to see what the valve clearances were and the left side was way off . I mean the exhaust wasn't even opening. I must not have tightened them good enough, and they loosened up. Started it up and it sounds like a whole new bike. Gonna take it for a spin and see what's what.

Yeah , I see a company sells a a ball foot or roller ball taper maybe out of the uk. I am thinking about purchasing those. The elephant shoes would of been great but I would've either had to modify my existing rockers or buy new one, and I would've had to wait another two weeks to get them . I was running out of summer and money. Either way the bike has lasted fifty years with these tapets what's another year or two. I'm sure I was the problem anyways I probably had them hand tight and never snugged em down.

In all of my years, I have never reused the adjusters.(learned the hard way)

They deform from wear or flattening from too much lash. Cannot get a stable lash reading after reuse.
They also come out of adjustment easily.

and BTW your plugs are burning oil

And I'm still having trouble with mid throttle

How can you tell ?

I would b getting valve adjustment right before I tore down a motor going off one plug.

You have good compression.

Do a search for elephant feet adjusters by @5twins wins. He has done a good write up on his preference and a solution to the feet being to large for the XS rockers

I saw those , but it said you have to modi6yhe rockers. I found a ball foot option that is supposed to just fit. They also seem to be recommended. Have you heard of those?

Hmm. The way I would interpret the black is that he is running rich. But I do not know about this caked on residue. Just learned something. Run some new plugs and then take a look after a few hundred miles.
I did switch plugs and so far there's no white ash. I'm pretty sure it was caused by the the valves on that side no opening
