Hi Guys,

I am in the middle of doing the electrical on my 1983 Yamaha XS650 chopper build. I am almost complete running all the new wiring however I was hoping I can get some insight into the following before I get to this section of the electrical. I am running a Tytronic electronic ignition single and am wondering how to correctly wire it to the coil, see attached pictures for a better reference point. Its been a lot of work getting it here but its coming together and man is it looking mint!
I wanted to build something with my 81 year old dad and this was it!

Lovely story!!

Power from the ignition switch splits and goes to the red wire on the trigger and one terminal of the coil.
The blue wire goes from the trigger to the other coil terminal.

Can't tell from the pic, but I assume the coil is a dual fire coil... 2 HT leads? Polarity of the coil doesn't matter... red to one terminal and blue to the other.

Here is a better pic of the coil.

Thinking out loud here
A coil can get hot . It is not advised on Boyer systems to have power up for long time not running.
A carburetor can sometimes send fuel backwards ..into the filters.
Dont know about this type filters ..but warm coil can evaporate fuel and there is an electrical device
Specifically designed to create sparks nearby

Yes, the Tytronic calls for a "points" type coil with a primary resistance of 4 to 5 ohms. If you watch eBay, you can probably find one of these Harley coils cheap. I managed to score an old but unused Accel for about $30 .....

Good thinking. Lower resistance in the primary windings means more current being switched by the ignition unit. I'd say that's guaranteed to shorten the life of those Tytronic systems. As an aside, Tytronic may have gone out of business. Couple of times I tried, their website wasn't working.

Thanks for the replies guys! I just purchased the Tytronic about 3 months ago directly from there Ebay site. I am hopeful this whole set up will work as it should with the PMA and running the battery along with it.

Thanks JJames, I love the old early 60s so cal choppers and this for me hits it really close. My dads an old retired mill right but really just good at everything mechanical in general. He built an electric car using the yaris frame and had it registered in Ontario Canada. Guy came out to shake his hand and told him he is the first non manufacturer electric car registered for street use in Canada. This was 20 + years ago and still has and drives the car. Love the guy, have been learing lots on his lathe and milling machine. We custom made the whole entire front brake set up and some other small trick parts!

No experience with the Pamco, Vic, but typically when any ignition is left on too long without running, it's the coil what takes the beating. Most coils will overheat if they're not cycled on/off/on by the iggy.
K thx Jim. I usually remember to turn the ignition off when not running but as I age…. If it just fried the coil, at least I could replace it. A bigger pita if the Pamco went south.
