Hi all!
I bought a bobber XS650 some months ago to replace my current bike which I thought I was going to lose (insurance write off) I kept the bike so sadly the XS has been neglected. I've recently pulled it out of the shed with a view to having a 2nd bike on the road (less likely to lose my licence on it). Okay, here we go, the tank was internally as rusty as it could've been, now cleared out and cleaned. The carbs were in need of a good clean out, the idle jet settings were a mile out and the balancing was badly adjusted so I set to and sorted them out. Cleaned the oil strainers and put the right amount of good quality oil in.
Wouldn't start (no electric start, it's a kicker!).
After too long I discovered that the battery was kaput so a brand new one was fitted.
Fired up after a bit of leg workout. Ran surprisingly well, engine nice and quiet. Came to start it later and it wasn't having any of it. Checked everything I could think of and when I got to checking the battery it was below 10v.
I suspected the charging circuit wasn't doing what it should so as a starting point I took the stator brushes out to see if they needed replacing, yes, they're worn but still within tolerance. I'm pretty sure that I've replaced them correctly but I've added a photo to see if anyone can see something glaringly obvious. Fingers crossed!!!

I didn't measure the voltage while the motor was running, the battery was brand new and measured something like 12.8v before I fitted it and got the motor running, afterwards it was well below that!
 
Just been reading about that my friend, although I'm not a complete novice with older motors, the electrical side has always panicked me into asking for help! My late Dad was a fully qualified auto mechanic and I learned a lot from him back in the day but that test is totally new to me however it does make sense! Thanks again.

Glad that it makes sense. Without a magnetic field, there's no charging. So it's fundamental. If there's a magnetic field, then move on to the stator tests. Etc....

The XS650 charging system doesn't deserve the bad reputation it seems to have. It's similar to what's fitted to older BMW, Guzzi and countless millions of cars. Simple and reliable once you understand how it works. And cheap to maintain using an industry standard rectifier and an automotive regulator. But that's getting ahead of things for now.
