Everett's XS650 Revival Thread (1976 XS650C)

Sounds like you’ve got the spark plug resistor situation figured out but that can definitely be a huge problem. I had no idea before getting into bikes that there was a resistor inside of a lot of spark plug caps especially on old motorcycles. And now they put the resistor inside of the modern plugs and doubling up is no bueno

For the second time in a week… I will give you some schadenfreude feed.

Last night I learned that the key positions on the XS650 are off > run > park.

In completely unrelated news, through sheer determination and hard work, I have resolved my brake light problem, neutral switch, and my remaining starter issue.

Vroom vroom! It’s running 🙌

Looks like your tach is not registering anything.

That could be a problem… hopefully just within the tach cable, but I’ve read about the drive being connected to the oil pump cog. Hopefully you’re getting good oil pump action.

Your exhaust definitely sounds much different than my 650

yeah. Icky aftermarket slip on. I’ll replace it at some point.

Fingers crossed my tach issue isn’t awful.

I think you should be able to check to see if the cable is spinning by removing it from the tach end,
Or check the cable itself by removing at both ends and spin manually
Unfortunately I had to pack it up for the night. I have a few things I need to address, but tach is very high on the list.

Unfortunately Bezos sent me one wrong sized air filter, so I have one wide open carb. I’m hoping that is the source of my runaway idle. New filter on the way, but this has to be top of the list, because it’s not idling well enough to really address anything else.

Once I get it even sort of running smooth, I’ll (1) try and identify the source of my charging problem, and (2) track down the tach issue.

I still have a few electrical odds and ends to address (horn, flasher relay - again, parts on the way).

Oh right… I also need to address the goddamn bolt I snapped on the sump cover 🤦‍♂️

A runaway idle could be as simple as your throttle cable routing. I would check on that to be sure there are no tight spots and getting hung up anywhere. Also check to see if the idle changes when you turn the handlebars. Also check for air leaks around your carb boots.
I am pretty sure the throttle cable was free. I initially had it bound up, but I rerouted it under the ears that catch the front of the tank.

And yeah... I will need to get the second air filter on there as soon as it comes in, then I'll check if there is a problem with the boots. Really hoping not to have to replace those... I am struggling to find the ARS BS38 boots - does anyone know of a supplier? Are the Mikes boots as bad as the popular consensus seems to be?

Try shopping for Tourmax inlet rubbers. The ones I bought are ARS in Tourmax packaging.
