Hey y’all,

Hope you’re well. I recently purchased a 1979 XS650 as my first bike, and so far I love it. I am looking for some advice though. After replacing a few parts to get it running (ignition coils, spark plugs, fresh oil, etc,) there is almost a ‘dinging’ noise coming from the cylinders while it’s running. I’m pretty novice when it comes to working on engines and I’m fully aware this could be a big project (part of my motivation for buying an old(er) bike to begin with,) but I figure you folks would have a better idea of what I’m dealing with than I would. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

I realize my post is a little thin on details, mostly because I’m still familiarizing myself with the nomenclature surrounding the topic. I will do my best to provide as detailed of answers I can to any questions. Also, if you have any helpful guides, resources, manuals etc that your willing to share, I’m all ears!

Here’s a video of it idling-

Yes, sounds like a loose valve. Your idle speed is a bit high. The spec is 1100-1200. You can download any and all the manuals for free, both parts and service manuals, from the XS Cafe.

You have a very unique model there, the only Special model that came with alloy spoked wheels.
