First time working on clutch, should they be able to move horizontally?

I looked at numerous diagrams, it seems like there's a few different set ups so I want to make sure I'm doing this right.

I have a 1975 with original clutch, I took it apart and when putting it together I noticed that when the clutch is fully assembled the plates have play in them horizontally so they can separate just by moving them with my finger. (Note they don't spin forward or backwards, there is just spacing in between)

Should they be loose light that it should there be tension?

No, the pressure plate should be pushing them all tightly together once the springs and screws are installed. But, check that you have the pressure plate aligned correctly with the basket. In only fits on there correctly one way and may not fit in tight enough if done wrong. There's a dot stamped on the end of one of the inner basket teeth and it should show through the small hole in the pressure plate .....
