Forum decline

I spent a couple of hours last night on a Speed Triple forum because I decided to start up mine yesterday evening and it started making white clouds out the tailpipes. I really needed to be convinced that it was just condensation burning off and after reading dozens of threads I am 90ish% sure that's what it is. I did have to read through a lot of snarky answers and dismissive ones and usually there was one that had a broke down explanation of why some issue was happening or how to figure out why. step by step like. No group of members came together and tried to figure out the problem like this one does and I appreciate that because I need it. It was kind of entertaining though as these guys talked shit to each other and had some weird inside jokes going on so maybe that was what this group was for. In the Army and on the job we bust each others balls for a laugh all the time. I think I got it figured out though and am 90% sure it was just condensation. I'll start it up as soon as this valley fog burns off. So yeah this forum is different, that's my point.

As a H-D, Indian and M.G. forum member, my experience has been that this one is the best. Both the Indian and M.G. forum have been very helpful, but the H-D forum is a bunch of jackasses with few answers.

I agree on the Harley forums. I love Harleys and Corvettes but don't belong to one forum for either one. I don't really understand why but those two groups are some of the meanest folks I've run into. This forum represents what the standard should be for all forums. Helpful, Kind, Respectful, and some of the friendliest folks I've been associated with.

There was a very good Sportster "mailing list" (something before there were forums). Actually believe I learned about this forum after running into someone who was a member here and just happened to be at a picnic one of the guys on the Sportster mailing list was having.
yam650@micapeak.com is where I started and how I got connected to the community at large. I traveled to rallies and did a good bit of handshaking. There are several members of that group here, including the list owner. That mail list is pretty quiet, but it’s still alive. I had a meetup with one of the members just one year ago. I have a lot of friends in this hobby because of the online forums. These are now folks I ride with or just talk to on the phone. It’s been a good run so far.

This forum survives because of the membership and passion for the bike of choice. Also we are generally (but not solely) older enthusiasts that care. Further still all topics are valid for discussion and all are welcome to comment. Help and support is here for all who need and ask; and all questions are treated seriously and answered by people with years of experience. Of course many other topics are covered, it’s not just about the bikes.

In my view not all forums offer what XS650.COM has.
Speaking of, I'm actually getting closer to having Rusty back (My mechanic quit mid rebuild/mod). I can't get Doc to sign off on me riding again, yet, but it's coming. Having said that, we're likely to get our snowy winters back now. We've gone from multiple feet storms every other week winters to near nothing last few. Er, decades.

wearing my xs650.com T-shirt I was chatted up in a restaurant in West Tennessee. Had two xs2s in his yard. had never heard of the forum. he got the full rah rah speech and invite. I carefully avoided the buy em trap he was trying to snare me in. 😯
But, but, but...why?

Just dropped in after too long under a rock. The ONE forum and folks on it I missed and found again after crashing my komputer was XS. Well I still use the cash DB. Maybe someday I'll graduate to something without a line into the wall jack.
or even go see what all .the hoopla about this soc. media stuff is

I have the feeling that nowadays I'm pretty much able to keep up with new postings on this forum. I've never tried to read everything that is posted, when I first came here, June '19, would have been an impossible task - there was like hundreds of thousands of posts on so many topics so just scratched the surface and followed those new threads that looked interesting.

But now when I look at https://www.xs650.com/whats-new/posts/?skip=1 seem to recognise most of the traffic. Has this site slowed down over the past five years like @Ratranger said at the top of this thread?

Fair observation Raymond. Like you I always check out ‘new posts’ as well as the ones I follow.
There are few ‘new posts’ I can offer real advice too, so I move on. Seems to me there are a core of ‘posters’ that are regular; we know who they are, and thank goodness for them. Even I have had a reduced input over the last year as life (loss of my business) has put pressure on bike work time. But I still love this community and the distant friends I now cherish. We keep this community alive.

Not really. Traffic peaked around 2013 and then declined for many years, but now is pretty stable. There was a nice bump in traffic during the first year or so of covid, and 2024 has been good. The number of visitors is up 26% compared to 2023. The number of posts is up 9% and reactions are up 30%.
