Hi guys,

Just acquired what I was led to believe is a '73 US import XS2/TX650. However on checking the engine and frame numbers (frame: S650 208582, engine: S650 130627) they don't match, suggesting the motor is not the original motor. I have two XS650s already, but 79 & 80 models, so not very clued up on the earlier stuff. Would I be correct in thinking that back then frame and engine numbers would still match?

Can't give you the definitive answer, every Yamaha I have owned had matching numbers.

That's a very nice looking bike :)
Cheers. Yeah, it has a couple of minor things I will improve (tap out small dent in front guard, get front brake switch working, maybe respoke wheels) but generally it looks good. Had quite a bit spent on it judging by receipts. Just a bit miffed I didn't spot non-matching numbers.

Mine match.

When I went to get it registered in California they checked both to see if they matched. If they didn't, and I couldn't prove that I'd bought a motor with a serial# from the frame and what was on the title, they'd have reason to believe I had a stolen motor.

Sit down. Pour a Brandy spiked with something strong, then check your rocker box numbers match. If they dont, better not ruin your day by pulling the clutch and checking the case numbers.
Sometimes there are days you wish you had never woken up.
Go for a ride, blast the darkness and enjoy the flow. Numbers are used by bean counters to rule your life.

Yes, know about the rocker/head and case numbers, but only just bought bike today and its motor was 'rebuilt' four yrs back and sounds very smooth and quiet, so no plans to pull clutch off it just yet.

I would not worry at all as long as you can get your bike registered.
That being said was the bike sold as a matching numbers example and did you pay more because of that?
Matching numbers are nice but with bikes this old it not uncommon here for non matching numbers.
Its a nice looking bike dont let numbers thing spoil that for you.

The numbers on the head, rockerbox and behind the clutch are factory numbers used to match cases that are line bored as a set on the production line.

Cheers Signal. I think the seller made a genuine mistake, assuming I was asking if engine and frame numbers matched those in the registration document (which they do) rather than what I was really asking which was are they the same number on each. I'm aware of the other numbers as I've pulled both my other xs motors apart and spotted those. Its a very nice sounding bike, quiet from cold, revs smoothly and with lots of receipts for gaskets, seals, bearings, filter screens etc etc, so looks like its been thoroughly rebuilt. So I reckon that's more important than matching numbers. Cheers once again.

The last 73 I had
Had matching numbers if that helps
If you can get the title transfered just ride it
Do they phisically look at the bike closely to see
Here in the states MN they just wanted pictures and I think I could have fudged that
