I have a 1977 xs650. I'm about to do the front brake. It's a single caliper. I'm new to the bike and from what I've read it's usually found on the on the right side. Mines on the left. Maybe a stupid question but does it matter what side it's on with a single? I'm about to take it off and service it. And want to know. It's currently working but my lever is very stiff so I want to clean and use the master cylinder a kit I bought.

It can be mounted on the left side, but you need to have a left side caliper and mount. If you try to put a R/S caliper on the left, then your bleed screw will no longer be at the highest point making it difficult to bleed. On my 77 I sourced my L/S caliper and mount from an SR500 which has the same forks. In my case, I had a boogered up wheel and it was just easier for me to move the caliper and rotor to the left side.

Only pic I have of mine mounted on the left.

Here is the picture. I also included a picture how far I can pull the brake lever. I assume its the cylinder

To switch sides can I just undo the side bolts the one on top and 2 lower down. Then turn the front wheel?

Maybe a stupid question but does that means the wheel is on backwards as well?
Yes it is backwards. You're also running without the front fender. It also acts as a fork "brace." Without it the front end will be a little squirrelly... especially during moderate and hard braking.

Yes, slide the tubes out of the triple tree and swap them, side to side. And when re-installing them, you can't extend them so far above the top tree like they were. With a fender mounted, it will hit the bottom tree when the forks are fully compressed. I lower my forks but only a little (1/4") ......

And here's how the forks should look. Caliper on the rear of the right leg, axle nut on the right side, and speedo drive on the left side .....

Well, it wouldn't work with the speedo drive on the right because it would be running/turning backwards, lol. The drive needs to be in these as an axle spacer, even if it's not hooked up.

That's what I thought lol. As for the height. Sorry about the shitty ruler my kid took my metal one. What height should I have it too? 3/4 inch to the top?

I can't tell you that for sure. To check how much space you have, you'll need to remove the fork springs and fully compress the forks. Stock, the tube was flush with the top of the tree. I only raise it 1/4" because I run a fork brace as well and that's all the space I have ......
