Hi everyone, can anyone explaine how the new style cam chain guides are ment to work on the early xs1 ? As you all know the early ones were flat. The new style ones sold by Yam bits & Mike's xs have a channel in them. They advertise them as a replacement for my xs1b. Mine arrived and I was shocked to find the cam chain to wide for the channel in the guide. Any advise on this would be very much appreciated.

The chain is definitely to wide for the channel,I'll have to see what others are doing with the early xs.
Not sure what you guys are expecting to see, but what you're looking at is perfectly normal. It's a guide, not a friggin' tunnel. The side plates fit inside the guide edges, the pins don't. If the pins were to sit down inside the guide, they'd act like a saw.... slowly chewing up the rubber.

^^^^^ This.

Thanks!

The problem with the MikesXS guides we had back then was the holes. They were drilled and tapped off kilter. They weren't perpendicular to the mating surface. They'd work after a fashion, it's just my OCD wouldn't let me install them.

Since I did that mod, I've built up about 4 engines for other folk. They supplied the guides, so I don't know where they came from, but the problem was fixed on those guides. It's pretty easy to check your holes... and pretty obvious if they're drilled wrong.
