If the bike has been sitting for a while lets say over night or longer and then when I start in half a mile. I have to turn the Fuel to PRI and leave it for a couple of miles and then turn it to ON for it to run without dying. is this normal ? This is an 81 XS650

No. Not normal. I use PRI to start my bike if it has been sitting for weeks. Do you have a vacuum line connected between the petcock and the intake?

Marty is talking about the hose that goes from the petcock to the tube on the inlet manifold on the engine side of the carb. This creates a vacuum, drawing the fuel down to the carb when the engine is running

Problem solved. The bowel was close to empty . Topped the bowl to the brim and turned to ON . Cruises even on 60 . I am a happy man.
