I was just reading an article this morning talking about a growing trend ( among the wealthy at least ) and that is , the proliferation of huge man caves to store cars, boats, motor homes…whatever and just a general hangout space to be near your toys. They often have full kitchens, bathrooms and living room space with huge flat screen TV’s. They are building these in residential areas, often skirting zoning restrictions for the size of unattached structures by connecting them to their house by a breezeway.
Neighbors complain “ it’s like having a tire warehouse Nextdoor” Some of these very very expensive, and I’m talking multi million dollar barns, are spurring lawsuits from their neighbors.
There is an older retirement community not far from me, it’s all relatively small , single story homes on generous sized lots, they are not part of a city so they are not subject to zoning regulations, they live in an unincorporated part of the county. Anyways a bunch of Baby Boomers have been snapping up homes there and bringing all their toys, many of them have built huge two story toy barns to park their motor homes in, and they can build them right up to the edge of the property. Where the neighbors used to have a view of the mountains, they now only see the big slab side of their neighbors garage, they are literally living in the shade of these buildings. To say the least the new neighbors are despised.
There is also a small local airport near me, and up until recently a bunch of guys were renting hangers just to turn them into party hangouts and store their motorcycles. The airport finally kicked them out!
I’d post a link to the article but it’s a paid subscription and it wouldn’t work.
