Gas cap rubber gasket

OEM Yamaha gaskets are still available on Ebay. Yamaha part number is 256-24612-00 or 90430-28093. They are generally better than the aftermarket ones from Mike's.
I’ll tell you one thing that won’t work for sure. I had some old heavy duty inner tubes that were the right thickness and I cut one out of it to try. It worked for a while….then it swelled up and outgrew the gas cap! 
Try Niche Cycle. Or possibly HVC Cycles depending on the year of the cap.
Buy an OEM fuel cap gasket if you can. Aftermarket ones are not of similar quality. With OE it’s one and done.
Try Part Shark or Partzilla. OEM price is about as low as they go.

I just looked at a new rubber fuel cap gasket for my 77 650D. Doesn't look to me like Yamaha listed the 1977 rubber as a separate part?
It’s listed as a separate part about every other year. Look at the parts breakdown for 1978 and 1979. The gasket is the same.
Aha. I looked at compatibility of earlier years. I should have looked at later years since they use the same cap. Thanks for that, I just hadn't thought of that. It's the obvious thing to do!
Edited to say - Looks to me like it's not a listed as a 650 part until 1981. Looking that part up in the UK, it's listed as SR400 fitment. Partzilla doesn't show it as compatible with a 1977 XS650, I realise that isn't guaranteed correct.

I’m pretty sure it’s the same for SR500, XS1100 Special, etc. I’m pretty sure that style cap has one seal that fits all, even though the caps have slight differences.
I'm tempted to say you're correct. But I don't really know.
The one you posted looks the same as every one I’ve replaced. I can’t imagine any reason why the hole in the top of the tank would be anything but a standard size.
According to MikesXS, 2M0-24641-00 fits XS650 from 1976 to 1984.

Thanks, it says the same at Heiden Tuning as well. I'll order a Yamaha one next time I make a parts order.
