......beyond the paint job that is. I am coming up on almost a month of ownership of my first XS and still just scratching the surface but learning more. Looking at some examples of different years I recently saw that the paint scheme on my 1975 gas tank is that of a 1979 model as well as the tank badges so it looks like the original tank was replaced at some point with a 79. It obviously fits the bike well but I recently ordered a pair of non vacuum petcocks that did not match the bolt holes in my tank. Maybe the hole spacing is different on the 79 compared to the 75 tank, or maybe the vendor just sent the wrong parts. From here on out as far the gas tank goes I will order parts for a 79 and when the day comes I may paint it to look like the 75 if I go the full resto route.

Last question can someone recommend a good source for non vacuum petcocks? One of my beefs these days is so many of the vendors have no help line or even email for tech questions. It's a drag to have to send parts back, in the old days of phone orders that rarely happened.

74 - 79 tanks are basically the same.tank with changes to the gas cap and peacocks and adding badges.

74-75 gascap no aftermarket alternatives

76-79 gascap. Aftermarket alternatives

74-77 manual peacocks same bolt spacings.
74-77 tanks have decals

78-79 tanks have.
Badges.
Vacuum peacocks. Bolt spacing changes

Thanks that is very helpful and explains the difficulty in sourcing the non vacuum petcocks I want. Hopefully someone can chime in with a good source for a quality pair that will fit my 1979 tank.

If no luck, you could make an adapter plate. If the holes do not overlap, a 5-6 mm thick plate should suffice. If they do overlap, 10-12 mm may be necessary. (Surely, you can re-use one of the holes)

I have an original 78E tank that I have swapped for another. On this idle 78E tank are two non-vacuum petcocks that - obviously - fit the later spacing...not sure where they came from, a po installed them.

You are welcome to them for the cost of UPS Ground shipping to you.I am in central TX.
