Getting the ‘57 beetle back on the road in 2024

I'd deffo get that starting belt - cor, what a bargain at $3.58

Newer heard of it before .. known many people and relatives owned one or more one had 5 I do believe
That is cool in My book in this computerized day and age
Seems Dangerous though should the belt get stuck and the belt fixed in hand or fingers

Having had at least 2 or more 6v vehicles in the fleet since the mid 80's, IF you have a decent (not ancient, say less than 5 years old) traditional lead acid battery and keep it maintained (electrolyte topped off, maintain it in a charged condition), I wouldn't be too concerned about that as a weak link. Use robust cables to the battery. 6v starts the twin ignition (16 plugs) straight 8 in our '30 Nash 490, the engine alone is probably 50% the mass of the VW Bug! And remember, 6v trucks won WW2- it can't be that bad!

Thanks for your comments!

I actually harvested two batteries for the car. I got one that’s 1 year old and charge was maintained for the year while being stored indoors. This one tests well and is on a battery maintainer.

I just got another one that is 5 years old but was purchased new a year ago. Not sure it of had acid in it the first 4 years of its life. It wasn’t charged regularly and was stored in a garage. When I picked it up it still had 6V in it but it read on my Chinese battery tester that it had a bad cell. I charged it anyway and my smart charger hasn’t told me it’s a bad battery yet. It’s been on the charger in maintenance mode for several weeks now. I load tested it and it tested at the high side of weak, just under “good”. For reference, my “good/newer” battery tested the same.

When I get the car running I’ll install the older battery to see how it performs with the newer battery riding shotgun. Just curious if my meter is sending something not so important.

Shopping for a clamp meter but know nothing about them. Are A/C - D/C clamp meters the norm or are they usually dedicated to one type of current? I also see they have a spec of “counts”. Ranging from 2,000 to 10,000. What’s that mean? An online search tells me it has something to do with the accuracy of measurement of DC current. Is a higher count more accurate? Thx

AC amps are cheap and common
You need DC amps, the dc ones do both. $20 difference if that.

150 AMP D.C. amp clamp.

The Chinese Amazon meters I was looking at appear to do both.

And, contact cements these days are a pale shadow of their former selves.
Used to be, when I was a kid, a proper contact cement would glue you to the wall if you got careless with it.
And you'd be high as a kite from the fumes, too.
Yes I don’t use it often but do notice it doesn’t stick as well as the old formulas. Still smells really bad though. I’ll have to see what the solvent is.

More done, limited pics. Installed heater cables; set gear shifter and bolted it in; installed heater box linkages; force fed oil into motor through oil pressure sender port. Pumped in about 2L until oil started coming out of pushrods. Motor should be primed now for quick oil pressure on initial start up.

The motor installation is planned for next Monday or Tuesday. 🤞🤞
