These appear to be a part I should want to have, but I'm late to the party concerning these units. What is the advantage of this unit compared to the stock unit on my 1980 XS650? I imagine there must be one considering the effort put into these, but I want to know exactly why before I buy. I hope this makes sense, and thank you in advance!

a cheap, functional backup. Used prices for stock are insane. As in I'd completely rework my ignition system before I ever bought a used one. Buy a ton of these, test to make sure they work, send back the ones that don't. More of a "keep in the tool bag to get me home" type thing. That's what I have mine for.

There's no advantage over the original TCI box. Well, other than cost that is. I carry one as a spare in case my TCI box fails out on the road. It's 40+ yrs old.

Yes. This is a functional spare. If you have no functional stock TCI, this runs your bike. I carry one in my tank bag. Seat of the pants, my bike runs this or the stock TCI just the same.

I have to use two vendors for me to put this together as I want it. One for the connectors. Your bike uses Sumitomo connectors. The black box connects to a Yazaki and I only buy one side of each and not a set. The wire and the sheathing comes from another vendor. I'm using wire that matches your wiring diagram. Yes, you can certainly do this yourself. I've figured out the ins and outs and I have a professional grade crimper. I'm just using the information provided on this forum by the geniuses who work here for free. Thanks to @Team Junk, @Jim for pioneering this.

If you prefer the security that eBay provides. I have the whole shebang listed there. I can put one together for you if you PM me. I only have one not committed to eBay right now. The black boxes are tested on my motorcycle.

I've shipped out over a dozen to this group. All good so far.

Unsure how to message you, so hoping you see this old post. By chance do you still have any jumpers? Or could you tell me where to source the connectors?
Thanks,
Weston

Since I had a need for these, I made several. This harness will allow you to run a Suzuki GN250 TCI on your 1980 through 1983 XS650. The GN250 box will directly replace the Yamaha XS650 TCI. The TCI box IS NOT INCLUDED. You can buy one here:

CDI Ignitor Box Digital Ignition Fit for Suzuki GN250 Motorcycle

The harness is about ten inches long and the wire colors match the XS650 wiring diagram. The TCI side is a Yazaki locking connector. The motorcycle side is a Sumitomo locking connector. What's pictured above was tested on my motorcycles.

I will need to know whether your XS650 has a six pin or eight pin connector. The 80/81 bikes are six pin. The 82/83 Heritage Specials are eight pin. I have a limited number of each and I'll pin to order.

I will ship to you for $40.00 if it can get to you in a USPS Flat Rate Box. All others, $30 plus shipping or $30 at my door.

The TCI box is not included. The pictures are to clarify what this harness fits.

Marty,
I saw you may have one left. I have a 1980 XS650G and would like to order one if possible.
