GSXS650R Abomination special

Instead of putting the xs engine in a bandit. just get a complete, running bandit and re-phase the engine so all the pistons run up and down together. in order to get that xs feel. lol :D
Hello Fella
Sorry, I missed the post! I rode around on the last carburettor Fireblade that ran on 3 cylinders for ages and it sounded great through a supertrap "silencer".

No room in the garage? Sit in your living room with a few people around the frame and drink beer........
Saturday and nothing happening, gsxr job is out of my hands at the moment but the Bandit seems like a good side by side "project". It's actually far from overwhelmed in there although the picture looks dodgy.
When I rode gsxr's I truly hated these overweight bastards but time mellows us, anyway the XS lump looks much better in there then the Suzuki lump......
Later👍

i love what you are doing waca. It would be interesting to me if you could weigh the frame to compare with the xs frame of 61lb. Jay

Good morning (or evening) to forum members
Again, been away working for a few days so quick update. The slingshot frame still at workshop with engine, exhaust header angle has become an issue as the engine may need to tilt to create dampening set up. Imagine sitting in a Cab with the meter running while the driver goes into his house, has dinner and goes to bed until the next day...that anxiety is how I feel. If I'm still in the same position next week I'm collecting it and will access the build. The Bandit will go ahead in any case as I plan to weld the removable section shut and remove the 2 spars that obscure the front of the tappet cover, let's get it in there and look. Lastly, this engine is a mash up, the barrels (Jugs) are 1973 on original liners that are adequate for use, I'm lacking a Crankshaft and rods. If the Slingshot goes "tits up" I'll sell the engine as rebuilt and crack on with this one. Cheers

Hello Forum.
Ground hog day (or same old shit day) As I was working this morning I thought I'd rig this thing together when I got home to show how it fits in a Bandit frame.
The whole motor top will load from the top of the frame so that allows you to weld it shut and move the bracing struts upwards (or smaller fill it) again a drop of half an inch is okay to avoid this.
Frame to cases sections will have to be welded in after building up mounts further inside the frame , I don't have any pipes here so look at the ports and try to visualise. The only bandit fuel tank that will fit is a MK2 aka "ugly turd" but you will still need to access fuel outlet, everything else is a cut and weld. Everything fits and welding points easy to sort out. The rear top frame spar does cause some interference with the rear fumey outlet oily thing but only by a gnats genitals.
Without stating the obvious, the mass of the air-cooled lump is really surprising and it could make a good build if the fuel tank could be moulded to loose the Bandits turned up lip to the headstock, this is something that truly F###s the look of a MK1.😁👍

Removed a pound of weight from the Bandit frame by removing the sonic the Hedgehog thing from it's hiding place at the front of the frame, this is supposed to stop a "buzzing" through the bars and metal at certain velocities.
I got rid of it because;
A) An xs650 doesn't seem to "buzz" unless buzzing can displace kidneys or dental amalgams.
B) I've ridden a few Bandits and the last thing they did was give me a "buzz".
Lastly my old neighbour insists on calling them "Bandidos" and says things like "I thought you hated Bandidos" he just can't grasp the shit he's going to get me in☠️

Hello. You've got a little more access if the engine comes down a bit on the lower rails, but I might weld removable section shut and cut out the side spars and brace further up. Little hands and a torch otherwise 👍

Hi waca: one of the problems of fitting an engine into a new frame is aligning the chain sprocket with the swinging arm pivot and looking at the pictures the engine needs to be lowered by 3 inches. Jay

Hello fella
Sorry for late reply, and yeah you are right about the chain run/swingarm pivot. I'm going to have a look tomorrow as after your post I checked the rear engine picture and thought Bollocks! I'll post again when I remove my head from my arse, I think I can drop it 2 inches and line up from the front, 3 inches would require a notch and brace under the lower frame. Cheers and 👍

Morning Forum
Collected slingshot xs650 from engineer as my bill was racking up, tilting the engine forward and using struts to prevent any sag/lift etc was not my idea at all, the engineer started working from the idea of the aluminium framed Norton drag racers from America and not a weekend London pothole dodger. I'll reassess it after summer. I'm going ahead with the Bandit as I work at getting the engine as low as I can.
ps.I sent this screenshot to the engineer to give him an idea...he ignored it😁

Putting together what amounts to 2 engines in various conditions, this head came in from America in good condition to the point of looking like it had been vapour blasted, this was on the left side intake, the right chamber is spotless. On a different note, 18T 530 front sprocket (new) the rear wheel for this one is 16" gsx1100f power screen with a 37T 530. I couldn't get down to 36T so comments welcome (no, I'm not getting to make one to fit) on sizing
I'll get this up as a roller before I post again I think. Cheers

I'm running 18/44 with a 520 chain with 17" wheels. That puts me really close to stock gearing with high ratio primary gears. Getting the high ratio gears did 2 things for me, 1. Let me correct the gearing with a smaller wheel and 2. Gave me more clearance between the chain and swingarm.

Thanks for reply, always good info when someone moves away from stock equipment for whatever reason, I'll have a look at that primary gear set up in any case. Cheers

Got back yesterday and commenced on this pile of sh..... sorry project! The engine is now exactly where it should be or can be, look how close those lower mounts are! I shouted "FUCK" when I saw just how much I'd have to take off the swingarm post to get it on those bandit mounts, the left side isn't a problem but it's just to much material on the other. So that's where the frame inserts will position the engine so a little more lower frame will be removed to accommodate them, upper back mounts are straight forward and bottom isn't much.

That's actually looking much better than I thought it would.

Thanks for the reply, I wish I could speed things up as all the parts to try out are here but I get one day a week! When the lower cases go on I was taken back by the way the bandit frame shrinks, I'll get it outside and get it rolling before doing anything else. Cheers
