Hey y’all,
I’ve been working on my first chopper for a little bit now. I’ve hit a snag. I’m running a 2000s rear dyna spoked wheel and I’m looking at caliper options. I have both styles of brakes(as shown in photos) but the black style doesn’t seem to fit between the wheel bearing and axle plate. I wouldn’t mind running the silver one but I’m wondering how to mount it.

You’d have to take a lot of meat off the black caliper bracket to make it work and even then is it structurally going to be ok and you’d have to compensate for the change in disc positioning. A dyna has about an 1.5” increased width of opening compared to a standard XS to allow for that setup. I mean obviously you could get a rear HD wheel with a narrower hub, go back deeper into the evo or even shovel era and there’s a ton of cheap shit out there if you want to go that route. That’s also going to possibly require an axle change, 03’ back is 3/4”, 04’ used 1” until I think 08’ when they changed to 25mm, what size axle are you currently running? You can make the silver caliper work but it’s going to require a custom bracket, fabkevin has some great shit, or just make your own if you or your buddies have fabrication skills. Or just sell off all your shit and buy an XS drum, it’s a chopper not a club style, no need to stop fast. I build mostly Harley chops and they stop fine but fuck I’m definitely not taking them out to track days.

It's often hard to tell about exact clearances and spacing from pics - the angle can make things distorted. It's desirable to have the tire centered in the axle plates, but it's imperative to have the rear sprocket lined-up with the countershaft sprocket.

On the brake: first, I'd suggest mounting the rotor on the wheel and place the caliper (both) on the rotor to see where things land (i'd even put the pads in). The clearance to the spokes needs checked first (not typically a problem on 16" rear). Then determine how much of a bracket is needed at the axle and how much collar you have room left for. The caliper can be mounted at 6 O'clock too and that also puts the torque arm on the lower frame rail. Pic attached of simple caliper brackets - just for ideas

Thanks coffin. I think I might be able to draw up something at work for our cnc mill. I’m gonna run the silver style. It’ll be easier than machining the black one down.
