Headlight bargain!

In the GS world, that problem's long been solved by the use of a series reg-rec.
Google SH-775 and let the words lead you...
Thanks I had a quick look and will read more tonight. Looks the same but as I understand it the device switches the windings on and off vs shedding the voltage through heat. Could this damage the windings? @Jim can you comment?

The dealer I ordered from said they can’t process the order because I didn’t supply a VIN. I explained it was for another application. They said without a VIN I wouldn’t be able to return the part. I got pi$$ed off and cancelled the order. I’ll order from my local dealer and that will save shipping although the parts themselves will most likely be a bit more. I think I’ll just order one set to see what I get.
Sorry Vic. Not that well versed in motorcycle PMA's.

Ok thx. I figured if anyone in our group would know, you would be amongst them.

Those are car headlights, right? They're made to be used in pairs if they are, and one alone on a bike may not have the best pattern. Specific motorcycle headlights are usually marked as such and have a different pattern (fluting in the lens) than a car headlight. I got a nice original H4 from an 850 triple off eBay for my '83. I knew it would swap and fit because the chrome ring is the same part #. I got the complete headlight, bucket and all, for around $25. I thought that was a good deal and I was more than willing to pay that for an original Koito light. Heck, aftermarket ones cost about the same.

XS850 and XS1100 Special have glass lens halogen lights. They fit XS650.

yep:

though some manufacturers go with the auto-type of radiation patter. Also the site got left-hand/right-hand confused

Philips Ultinon warm white is on my shopping list for my car.
Just dropped some coin on a pair of these. It was considered purchase because Philips are curiously reluctant to give out lumens figure, but I suppose it's going to be better than halogen.
At twice the price of Chinese H4 LEDs that I've been using for years with no failures, they'd better be worth the money.

I am preparing to do a bake off between different lamps and measure candela.

here is a good video comparing the cool-white version of the lamp to halogen. It is in Ukrainian, but you can follow the main conclusions:

the warm white version (the Classic/WeatherVision) should be ~ 15% lower in lumen output because of eye sesnitivity to the warm white spectrum is lower and some efficiency penalties to LEDs when the color is tuned to lower CCT (correlated color temperature)

Finally got around to testing headlight options. I plugged in the 7" lamp from Mike's XS and noticed the illumination pattern is clearly designed for driving on the left side of the road. The kink in the low beam rises up and to the left. It’s marked as DOT compliant, but based on the beam pattern, it definitely isn’t.
I reached out to Mike’s, they asked me to send it back for a refund and said they'd investigate. According to them, they’ve sold thousands of these and I’m the first to report this issue.

For context, I work in the automotive lighting industry. The beam pattern is primarily shaped by the fluted lens and the bulb holder that tilts the bulb within the lens housing.

In my local vintage motorcycle group, a member posted this find. It’s an old headlight upgrade kit that’s still available. Two 7” Koito glass lights with H4 bulbs, wiring harness, zip ties and looks like relays too. My price before tax and shipping was $24.76 Cdn from an on line dealer. Do I need any - no, so I bought two kits 😄. Too good a deal to pass up. I’ll report more when they arrive.

I had a quick look at some US Toyota dealers and saw them for as low as $19 usd. Some eBay crazies have them listed for well over $100 plus shipping. If you’re going to do a headlight conversion I don’t think you can beat the price. Koito produces nice quality stuff.

Once I get mine and verify content and quality, if those attending the Paris Rally in June would like a kit I can order and hold it for them.

I installed one of these lights in the XS this evening. Nice quality compared to the Chinese headlight shell I had on the bike. The H4 bulb and headlight lens produced a nice cut off and rise to the right. I’ve yet to ride the bike at night but I believe it’s an improvement over what I had on the bike before.
