I've bought one of the Heiden Tuning oil filter kits. When I attempt to install it the outer cover does not fit flush with the surface of the clutch cover that it sits in. It seems as though around 2mm of crush is needed to make it seal. That seems like a lot to me - I have measured everything and double checked the measurements. Has anyone else had this problem?

∆∆∆∆ I agree. But I am also not 100% sure what you (the OP) are saying? The Heiden cover will obviously never be flush like the factory cover, since it is much taller to allow for the filter element. Also, while the factory cover is made to follow the profile of the clutch cover, the Heiden cover is symmetrical and the outside surface is essentially parallel with the internal mounting surface, thus it has more exposure toward the front than at the rear - see pic. If your cover is not seating properly, could you possibly have the filter inserted incorrectly?

I'm well aware that the Heiden cover won't sit flush. What I am trying to say is that with the insert and the filter in place correctly the sealing surface of the cover sits approximately 2mm out from the sealing surface in the clutch cover.

Honestly, I can't imagine that. Unless, again, the filter is not positioned correctly, or the filter is not the specified one i.e. too tall.

I'm definitely not trying to be argumentative, but I had zero problems installing mine and can't imagine what is causing your 2mm issue.

Maybe this will explain things a little clearer. In pic one the distance from the end of the filter to the gasket surface is 39.7mm (1.563"). In pic two the space it has to fit in the cover is 38mm (1.500"). This leaves the cover 1.7mm (0.063") from the gasket surface. I agree this is odd but at this stage the only way I can me getting out of this is to attack the insert with the milling machine.

Understood, thanks for the pics. Only things I can think of are: 1) The included filter is somehow the wrong one. On their website listing it cautions "
* CHAMPION FILTER ELEMENT: COF013 (old partnumber: X301-X356) WILL NOT FIT!!''. Maybe one got mixed in somehow? I have a spare or two of the correct filter and it measures nominally 35.5 mm thick metal endcap-to-endcap; 2) The aluminum insert that installs below the filter has been made incorrectly and is too tall? IIRC my insert was essentially flush with the opening (exclusive of the lip to seat on the rubber portion of the filter), or; 3) The cover has been machined incorrectly and the recess is too shallow?

For these last two, I might contact the folks at Heiden to source the correct dimensions that you can compare to, prior to spooling up the end mill. Per your pic, I don't remember that pattern in the floor of the housing but maybe it's just me. I also have the smooth cover without the fins, but I would think the inner details would be identical.

Best of luck, sorry I can't be of more help.

Cheers. The filter measures up correctly maybe someone else on the forum has an insert or a cover they can measure for comparison? I'll take your advice and contact Heiden before I go removing any metal.

Found it on my receipt from Heiden...just go to your friendly Honda dealer---he should have them in stock (all dealers keep oil filters in stock).
HONDA OEM# 15412-KF0-010

I also had a Yamaha number for some reason. I looked it up and the filter looks like the Honda one.

#15-6505 for Yamaha which is:
  • 1970-83 Yamaha XS/TX650 Replacement Filter for Oil Filter/Cooler Kit ~ OEM 15410-KF0-305/315

I did a quick search and the -KF0-010 and the HF112 they are interchangeable. So A case of same dog different leg action.
So far as the amount of crush I never considered it I just slapped them together they didn't leak so carried on.
I have one on the bench I can pull apart and check if needed or have you resolved this.

I have used both the Honda filter provided by Heiden Tuning and the HF112. They both work just fine. My order for the HF112 -

I still have unused examples of both, I can measure if required but I don't think it's necessary. Definitely no issues with the filter kit I have.
