HELP!

Hey everyone looking for some guidance here. This is my first EVER motorcycle so I know nothing!

I recently bought an xs650 (in pieces) allegedly ran, then was put in storage as a back up motor. Upon removing the towels that were plugging up the intake and exhaust ports I discovered sawdust and some other gunk inside the cylinder. I went ahead and took the valve covers off to reveal the top of the valves and they are clean as a whistle, with a very thin coat of oil, same thing when pulling the dipstick out and having a look inside. Motor turns freely, and appears to have compression!

My question: Can I get away with cleaning the cylinders out with some sort of chemical and compressed air mixture? Or am I stuck pulling the head off?

Well a warm welcome from Wales.
Sounds like you have a good base to start from; and as you have already looked at the valve train. Sawdust and other detritus in the bores is a little worrisome however. Can you use suction to remove the cylinder contents?
Then check the bores with a bore scope maybe. Personally I would do that and if unhappy with the scope images tear down the top end.
Watching with interest.

sawdust is part silica. Gives nice polish....but of course it may also promote rust on the top ring. Suction? sure, And after that, I'd pour in some kerosene and give her blasts of high pressure air...watch your eyes amigo...blast while rolling, baring by hand with attention to tight spots, if encountered, rock rock rock, like starting a big recip steam engine... roll her over several turns...with the carb-o-tooters either off or at WOT, better off. Then repeat with oily kero. several times. Use fresh or cleaned sparkers too, sawdust gets everywhere. Kero vapors can flash and burn... no ignition sources is a good idea. She ought to have a smooth roll when she's clean. beware tight spots...as it's easy to break the top ring if you force her. Kero can give a chemical burn on skin, especially in sunshine, wash up with soap.

I am for Adams bore scope they are not so expensive
I would oil with motor oil liberally .. Maybe possible pump it out via the spark plug hole doing it a couple of times kicking And some suction tool -- Unless there is a lot of sawdust .. I would assume it burn off and fly out Put up for storage with oil on the valve tops sends signals of someone knowing something about it.
So some sawdust there maybe not much ..
Dont want to give bad advice not seen pictures But after a check and as described above here cannot se any reason disassemble with this information
