Hope you guess my name ( new member, sort of )

Also, normally we use 7mm wires and those are 8mm. They may not fit into the coil or plug caps. What you want is plain, non-resistor, stranded wire core plug wires. Those fabric covered wires you have on there now may be that, you'll need to check them. I use EMPI VW Beetle silicone wires .....

Kits are less than $20. You get 5 wires in a kit, enough for 2 1/2 650's, lol. You will want/need to either change your plug caps or plugs to a plain, non-resistor type. NGK makes a very nice 0 ohm plug cap, the LZFH, but they seem to be hard to find .....

Ok, I went through this a while back when I was "lurking in the shadows" Lurking in the shadows.jpg Between this forum and that other one I came up with this set for the chopper and NGK R plugs. The word "suppression" made me think that those are the resistive type but if I understand correctly that's reffering to electronic noise from E type ignitions (which the chopper does not have). Now I am also reading that the carbon core suppression wire do have more resistance in the wire than braided copper or Mag type core wires, WTF??? I'm just going to get the ones you reccomend and add the old ones to the surplus. If there is one thing that I have learned from years of reading the Horse and Cycle Source magazines on the crapper, It's how to accumulate aftermarket motorcycle parts. I got a pretty good stash. Anyway here's the wires and plugs I have for the chopper. Maybe I can switch them around.

Now I'm going to go start up the triple and see if I can't get a ride in before the sun gos down, maybe get something to put in the "just ride" thread or just burn off all the spider nests that have accumulated on it, prove that I actually ride (to myslef mostly). Out!

It’s been bugging me, I couldn’t figure out why this sounded familiar…….DUH!

Yeah I do that, can't help it so if you read something that doesn't make sense it might be a random quote from some old movie or song. "Please allow me to introduce myself" would have been a dead give away though.

Damn! I just realized after re-reading your response that I missed an opportunity to reference "Kansas". Though my eyes could see it I still was a blind man.

I put random song lyrics in my signature. Hardly anyone ever notices, but it gives my addled brain a small measure of entertainment. 🤪
Using them in a thread title is a whole 'nuther level of cool. :smoke:

I thought it was a poem, maybe Poe. I thought that i saw someone on here was a fan and quoting but I don't remember who. I once made a political argument using the them from "Different Strokes" and none of them caught on. they were the angry radical types. It was pretty funny, to only me.

So I tried to get the wires I have out of the coils to see if they are braided but they are really stuck in there. Is there a trick to getting them out? On the 77 they come out pretty easy. I thought they might be these 1729845628870.png all the EMPI wires I found have that weird looking plug end, are you saying just to cut that off and install non resistor ends? Is there a certain place you get them from? Here are some better pictures

If you were to look in the end of a plug cap with the wire removed, you would see what looks like the end of a wood screw. The cap "screws" onto the plug wire. Coils are often the same way, so try to "unscrew" the plug wires from them.

Yes, on those EMPI wires, just cut the ends off. But, you have an electronic ignition so you will want at least one instance of resistance in each plug wire. We usually make that the cap, but those BP7ES plugs are getting hard to find, only the BPR (resistor) version seems to be readily available, so many of us are switching to a non-resistor cap. That way we can use the readily available BPR7ES plugs.

You were right about the wires being non resistive I just had the wrong plugs in it. The PO got a kit from lowbrow, I knew some of the stuff was from there because I found a bag with spare ends and boots in it that had their logo but I couldn't find those NGK plug caps on their website. I did find a 7mm kit but it looked way different. I decided to watch the installation video for shits and giggles and the kit used in the video is everything that I have on the bike now. It looks like they used to offer those spark plug caps but discontinued them,. They are still in the video though. I thought that was too much of a coincidence. I went and measured the width of the wires with a digital caliper and it was 6.89mm, measured the other 8mm set and it was 7.89mm. I figured it had to be that kit and they state that they are non resistive (Lowbrow). They also said that they are not recommended for use with digital ignitions because of accessories then went on to say that they use them anyway and have never had problems because they don't use accessories on their bikes. So I'm thinking that the wires with the NGK resistive plug caps and a non resistive plug are good to go. Let me know if I'm wrong in my thinking. I'm still going to pull the wire and check but I got to take the coil off to get a better grip on them. did you see the coil in the pics I posted? It looks to me like it's getting beat up by the tank, should I be worried about that? Anyways, thanks and sorry for the ramble. It's just how my head works

Yes, you should be good with those wires, the NGK resistor caps, and plain non-resistor plugs, if the wires are non-resistor. When I prep the ends of the plug wires, I like to do this to them to insure good contact with the wire. I strip about 1/8" off the insulation then "fan" the wire strands out in a radial pattern ......

Plug Wire End.jpg

I noticed you have the "E" type plug caps. I prefer the "F" type, the ones that fit on the terminal screw, as opposed to the terminal nut like yours. I think they grip better. So, if you ever do replace your plug caps, I recommend getting the "F" type .....

Cool, that's how they are done on the other bike (top picture) then just stabbed onto the spike in the stock type coils. I watched a tutorial on that, can't remember where, and never would have thought that that's how the connection is made. Now those wires are resistive and I either need to switch them out or find non resistive plugs which are getting harder to find? That one has points and I'm going to keep it that way for the learning experience. I wasn't going to say anything but I found a new mistake (loses more than hesitates) I went and checked and the numbers match, that's the one I chopped

Pipes came today. the others are cut special, double kind and i don't think they were done right. From reading threads I get that the general consensus on mufflers is don't skimp, get good ones. Are the cone engineering ones worth the price. What have you guys run?

If it hasn’t been said yet…Lotta folks here run the commando mufflers from yamahaxs650.com

Yeah the consensus seems to be dual exhaust with a revers cone of some sort works the best. I wanted to do a 2 into 1 high pipe of some sort because I think it looks more "tracky" to me but running good is more important.

So I have not done shit to my bike for a couple of days at leaste. I've become hooked on these threads and staying up all night reading and commenting. Now the sun is going down again and it's been cold AF at night. I think my right thumb might have some precursor to frost bite going on from gripping cold bolts (almost said nuts). Anyway I'm going to get out there and run some wires and put my new headers on so I'll have some progress to report. I'll leave you with this parting shot of the flat(ish) track from atop my other shop (toy hauler). Huevos Rancheros mi amigos, until we meet again
