How to break in a fresh rebuild

This has been covered before but here goes. Once up and running, ride it for the first 50 miles like this. Find an area that is pretty much clear of traffic. Get it up to around 35 to 40 in fourth gear. A firm roll on the throttle till about 45 to 50 mph, now roll off the throttle, let it coast back down to 35-40, repeat as much as you can in this first 50 miles.
The roll on and coast down helps the rings seat in. You can ignore this and just ride it but the rings won't seat as well or as quickly.
On mine it seemed to get stronger evertime I did this. You can feel it as the rings seat in.
Then retorque the head. Ride it, at 100 miles retorque the head, ride it, at 200 miles retorque the head. As you retorque the head it will get to a point that you aren't adding any torque. This means you can stop retorqueing. Then once a year check the tourque.
In the first few hundred miles you want to ride it easy, no hard throttle, no long runs at high speeds, no steady speeds, no lugging. After this break in period you can start riding it harder. No real hard riding till after 500 miles or so.

I've yet to get to that point but I hear it's a good idea to drain and replace the oil after initial startup(first 5-10min) to inspect for contaminates. it sounds like good advice to me. I know I wouldn't want to find anything after even a few miles of riding on a fresh engine.

Alright sorry to resurrect this thread but I just got my rebuilt engine running and am noticing a decent amount of smoke from the exhaust. I cannot actually ride the bike yet due to it being unfinished so I am wondering if its possible to break in the engine at a stand still or is a load necessary (i'd imagine it is). If i can't actually ride it should I simply wait to start it again until I can?
