I saw a photo this morning that jogged an old memory loose. A photo of a chrome plated revolver. When I was a kid and me and the other boys in my neighborhood were playing cops and robbers, I was the one carrying a real gun…….

Let me back up a little. 🤔 This was in the early 60’s, my dad was a hobbyist gunsmith and we had a lot of guns in the house. I already owned a shotgun and a .22 rifle as a kid and I used to go hunting and target shooting with my dad. But this very real pistol was in my toy box. My dad had deemed it to be junk and had removed the firing pin and gave it to me to play with! 😄
Can you imaging the reaction that something like this would cause today? Looking back it probably wasn’t very wise to do. This didn’t take place on a farm , I was a city kid!

Same here. Used to ride my bike through town with my marlin .22 slung across my back. No one ever thought twice about it.
When we were kids a Marlin .22 was thought of bout like a Red Ryder would be today. No one thought a thing of a kid with a .22, least not in my neck of the woods. I still have that gun!

Yup! I’ve still got my .22, a Ruger 10/22 with a little 4x scope on it, that thing is super accurate.

My Marlin model 60 was a Kmart blue light special... the rifle, 3X scope and a brick of 100 rounds, $29.95 😁
Think I was about 13-14. Bought it myself and rode my bike home with the box taped to the handlebars.
Same here. I remember plain as yesterday my dad and me at the gun counter with the Kmart ad pointing to the one we wanted. Memories!

As a general rule, we don't have guns in Britain. But as a child, had this really old and knackered air rifle. Would certainly not have been capable of shooting a pellet, but if you folded it coupla times it made enough pressure , when you pulled the trigger, to make a pop. Well, more of a fart perhaps. No idea where it came from. Took it to primary school a few times and my fellow eight year olds were impressed that I possessed a 'real' gun . . .

But, nowadays, NO.

Not so much with guns here
I have been sports shooting Mauser Rifle and Air guns With some success In the army got a tiny cup with the assault rifle

When I was in high school early seventies small town a kid got a win ( maybe second or third ) at the national Championships handguns .That was a positive sign according to the headmaster
So there was a field day where one could go to the shooting range .shoot a coupe of rounds 22 s and some larger.

Girls with none whatsoever background -- Never seen a firearm --- Perhaps on movie .. Out there on an open filed ..Muzzles pointing ?? ??
Just not the target No one hitting anything besides perhaps the post
Makes me laugh today
don't remember, maybe there was a list with a selection of who was allowed to try.
The demented headmaster coming up with such an idea For heavens sake one would get arrested coming up with the idea here today
5 minutes instruction and then pam pam pam pam
Rifle is one thing but a Pistol WTF -- No mishaps though
That would be front page today and .perhaps getting fired flat out .. Seeing small circles drawn at the temple with a finger.

I have not been into hunting but rumor was that it was difficult get a license for a 22 rifle the saying was it was used for poaching
Which was rather well known going on according to rumor in the 70 ies Some Country Folks had a tendency to hunt whenever the wanted and what they wanted Not so common anymore

Perhaps of interest there was a school shooting Gonna Ban AR 15 .even though it was not used in the Shooting Hunters are upset
The shooter had a history of mental problems but had been given licenses for 2 rifles and 2 shotguns
The same arguments Hunters that all in all is not causing problems are restricted because licenses have been given by the police to a Persons with problems

But are laughing when I Think about it teenage girls with handguns .. Back then here there was no women shooting as far as I know .. Not a single one
That has changed.

Not quite the same thing
But I got in trouble at school for "bringing a dangerous object into school"
I had a jetex motor screwed to the roof of a hot wheels car
I had two pellets in
I lit it up in the playground
First it was ok ,then it started to snake
Finally it rolled and started spinning in all directions
It ended up hitting a girl on the ankle!
I got right in trouble for that one

My first real gun was a Marlin semi-auto .22 rifle, tube mag in the Monte Carlo style stock. Wish I still had it. But have since replaced it with a more modern Marlin
