I am too freakin' old

Just woke up from my afternoon nap - yep I’m officially old!
No, you are not! I have been taking afternoon naps since I was a toddler, and I am 72 today. Being born and raised in Southern Europe, the afternoon siesta has always been a way to recover after a delicious lunch accompanied by a glass of good wine.

I served my last tour in the Navy right here in Downeast Maine 1988-1990. Work was 3 miles from our house (why I extended for one last tour...). I was in the habit of coming home for lunch and grabbing a 15 minute nap on the couch before returning to work.

Been a HUGE fan of naps ever since. They have expanded in duration to some extent, and on occasion I run into a situation that requires a two-nap day...
Some years ago, even the US Army was conducting a test on the benefits of a quick afternoon nap. From memory, I remember that they found that naps provide a rapid recharge of physical energy that makes afternoon work more productive and less draining. And the term "combat nap" was born.

I tried retiring from work twice already.

First time was when my highly paid directorship came to and end and I cashed out; I was 50 at the time. After three days of watching 'Homes Under The Hammer' (Day time telly) 12 hours a day, I had enough and opened my own business; COVID / BREXIT scuppered that venture and I retired again. Only this time Mrs C had also retired! Three days under her feet and I had to get a job. I am now at 65 the oldest 'junior' team member in Triumph Motorcycle sales and my mentor is only 35!

I do have the aches and pains of being older (and pi$$ing every night!), but I can still show the kids I ain't a pushover in the sales environment!

Too old to Rock & Roll or too young to die?............ Nah 🖕 to the world and live a little.

to be working with my arms up over my head.
Ditto. I tried that recently while crawling under the car. Shoulder resistance was unbelievable, followed by nagging pains all afternoon.
I'd not given it any forethought, just assumed nothing would be different from the last time I did it. And yet, not too long ago I was hanging up LED lighting in the workshop with nary a twinge. Just different muscles (and old injury sites) in play.
Getting old ain't for sissies.

Geez this thread sounds like a family get-together everyone sits around talking about their aches and pains. How many members do we even have under 50?
We did a "survey" on that a couple of years ago. IIRC, the big bump in the curve was in the 55-65 group. Old bike, old farts loving them.

Last week I was troubleshooting an ignition problem in our '54 Nash flathead 6. The dizzy is on the drivers side of the engine waaay down low. Had to stand on a step stool and lay across the fender and still stretch down to reach it. After replacing and adjusting the points, due to the awkwardness of the positioning, I found myself literally crippled by screaming groin area muscles. Thankfully I was more or less recovered after 24 hours. But it was not good at all while it lasted.

Good a place as any for this. Just received it from an ol' war buddy....

During the First Gulf War, all our little Sand Castle Kingdoms were (re)supplied by a C-130. We called it the trash hauler. It took it a full week to make the rounds of the Middle East, then it started over.

This is a pic of my outfit when we finally departed. Took 3 full days ridin' the Trash Hauler 'till we finally reached Riyadh S. A. From Riyadh we'd hop anything going west. As I recall, it took me 7 days to get home.

You can tell by the pic that rules and regulations were kinda lax during wartime ops. Notice the web seats neatly stowed along the wall? Yeah, was too many of us, so they stowed the seats and we sat on our packs on the floor. Fun times. :cautious:

Can you believe that was 35 fuckin' years ago!?!

Yikes! 😳 Looks like a cattle car!

My Dad used to talk about sailing to the South Pacific aboard a transport ship during WW2. He said they had them packed in like sardines. He said it was so hot , humid and stuffy below decks that they used to go topside and sleep on the decks.

I can imagine that C-130 being a tad bit stuffy with all those guys crammed in there!
