This may have been covered before but I couldn't find anything regarding a Honda shadow voltage regulator on the xs, I'm finally in the process of getting to the wiring, and don't quite know if this will work and deff don't want to mess something up.. I have been browsing the forum for a few years now, and a lot of you guys know your xs's like the back of your hands!! If I have to I will buy the correct regulator! I just had this one laying around and figured I may be able to make it work,..

Any help would be appreciated!!!

I'd like to just get the bike running then work on other circuits later if possible.

I hand drew a wiring diagram if it needs fixing or can be slimmed down on wires please point me in the right direction

My questions are do The reds from the regulator go directly to the battery or to the key switch
I have the greens to the green on the stator, the 3 yellows to the 3 whites on the stator, what gets plugged into the yellow from the stator and does the black from the stator go to a frame ground? Or ground on battery Or should I move black to one of the greens.

Will this even work or should I just opt to buy the correct regulator?

Thank you all in advance

I don't know what a Honda Shadow is, but that doesn't really matter. XS650 has a field excited alternator. Exactly how it's set up depends on if the motor is before 1980 or not. I think you should read the excellent guides to XS650 charging system in the technical section of this forum. Everything you need to know is there. Link -

So, I Googled the Honda Shadow and it appears to have a PMA type charging system. If you have a stock 650 charging system then that Honda part won't work. And that Honda unit is most likely a combined regulator/rectifier, not just a regulator. The 650 uses an automotive style 3 phase alternator. That means we can use automotive regulators. These are both cheap and very reliable. For a rectifier, we use a separate unit from the electronics world, again cheap and very reliable. The 650 charging system came in two versions, the early one up to 1979, and the later one from 1980 on. The main difference between the two is how the brushes are wired. Each one requires a different regulator so you need to know which one you have. If you can show us pics of your alternator/stator, we can tell you which type it is. And here's a thread on the regulators and rectifiers ......
