I thought about straightening them and but there was some pitting as well so I opted for a new set.

Making some progress. I've got the back wheel all cleaned up and all new bearings and seals and brake pads installed. The spokes cleaned up really nice and the I'll give the rim chrome a 7 out of 10. The picture of the rear tire looks to have a date code of 1978.
I also got my top end back from the machine shop today and the top end was in great shape. They cleaned everything up, slightly milled the head, honed the cylinders and as soon as I get gaskets I'll be ready to start re-assembly of the motor.

Avoid the Athena green gaskets like the plague. They're junk far as I'm concerned.

Before 2000 the date codes were 3 digit ie 47th week of 1998. (or 1988 or 1978....)
Still well beyond it's use by date.

Love the look of the K70!
Front Wheel reassembled with new bearings and seals. Front Forks rebuilt with new seals, fork tubes, and springs. I'm ready to start putting the motor back together now. Still waiting on the powder coating to get done.

Very nice! That really is fun, now things can start going back together again! I hope you were smarter than I was, and remembered to remove your steering lock before sending it to get powder coated. I melted my lock!

My 2nd least favorite job is cleaning off old gaskets, especially when there stuck on with yamabond. My absolute least favorite job is fishing a razor blade out of the motor that slipped out of my hand when I was cleaning gasket material off that was stuck on with Yamabond
I never noticed before that the sump filter bolts had safety wire holes. Did Yamaha build the with safety wire here?
Was an early thing. Don't think I ever found em wired even on real low # XS1's.....
They might have thought it was needed cuz you can't put much torque on those thin spacer tubes in the filter without squashing em.
