Hi there, I have a 80 or 81 xs650 unfinished project that i just bought. The guy I bought it from wasn't able to say what has been done to it. He also bought it as a project however he never finished it either, lol.

So here am I now, feeling a bit out of my element.

The bike has all the electrical wiring removed, and had the starter removed (kick start only) I believe that the bike is ready to run once I get the electrical all installed.

I have an entirely new wiring harness, new rectifier/regulator, (as well as the old). It looks like I have an original coil, ignition box as well. I could swear that I also had another black box labled CDI.

I was told the previous owner was trying to finish the build with a battery-less ignition.

I am unsure if I am missing any necessary parts. any advice would be helpful.

The box that says ignition unit is the original TCI ignition box. The stator has the TCI pick up installed. There's no way I can think of to run that battery less. Others may know better.

It's generally regarded that the original Yamaha TCI is a very good ignition system.

:agree:
