I just re-assembled the shaft / counter weights, and etc. on my XS2 after cleanup and lube. I'm thinking that I read that the timing wouldn't change by doing this. I understand that the valve timing would not change, but I'm a little confused when I try to figure out why the ignition timing didn't change. The only thing I can see that couples the ignition timing to the valve timing are the notches in the notched disk. Is that correct? I just have a hard time understanding how that could be accurate enough. Maybe my brain just needs a reset. LOL

Rotating the points plates is what changes the timing. If you didn't touch the points plate then your timing hasn't changed.
It just seems to me like the points cam could be reinstalled in a different position from when it was removed. How is that not possible?
You can flip it 180° out, that will give you a no fire/bakcfire condition

The notches and alignment pins are accurate enough to keep the timing unchanged. Unless you flip it 180° out.
OK, I've got it. I was pretty sure that it could be installed 180 out. Thanks. I thought that I'd just check my timing while I was at this. I've only checked the right cylinder, so far, and found it to be off a bit, points opening over in the "T" area instead of the F area. So, it will probably run better than it has since I've owned it. If the right cylinder is out, then the left may be just as bad or worse.
