Hey guys,,, I'm back. Ya it's been awhile.I'm finally ready to try and finish my XS2 restoration.

I need an engine stand. I'm not interested in building one. I like the idea of the one that goes on a car engine stand, but it seems like it would move around when you were torquing on bolts?

I'm open for suggestions. What's your recommendations? Thanks

I found this one. But it is pricey. It's made to hold inline 4 cylinders. But I'm wondering if it will work with a 650 twin. I think it will even if you have to put some spacers on it.

What do you guys think of this one?

Looks familiar, and costs over twice as much as the little welder I used to build mine, lol .....

If you're just looking for something to hold the engine upright on the bench, you can't beat the little angle iron stands. Dimensions come from an old Yamaha tech bulletin .....

Holy Crap! The same one here is a gouge price!

At that price I'd definitely make one myself.

I'm more taken by the cheaper one...

I was hoping to see a pic of the one you made. Are you offering to build me one,,,,lol.

I can't weld for crap. My eyes are too old. Can't see what I'm doing. By the time I buy the materials and pay my welder I don't think I would save much money.

If this one was any cheaper I would pull the trigger. But dang. $200 would go a long way on parts.

So I've never mounted one of these engines to a stand or split the cases. I keep reading about different stand not being able to split the cases. Does this one look like you could?

When you split the cases on one of these, you flip the motor upside down and lift the bottom case half off the top one. All the gears, crank, etc. stays sitting in the top half (case). Therefore, for a stand to work for splitting the cases, it must attach to motor mounts on the top case half only, like so .....

It can't attach to any of the bottom case half's motor mounts like the blue angle iron stand above does. So, the little angle iron stand is only good for storing a motor out of the frame or working on the topend. It's no good for splitting the cases and getting into the bottom end.

So I bit the bullet and ordered the K&L from amazon. I figured it's roughly $100 more than other options. And I think it's going to be pretty nice. So I'll be the guinea pig on this one,,,lol. Good thing about buying from amazon I can return it if I don't like it.

You guys are going to laugh at me for this one. But here goes.

Is there any particular reason I would need the cylinders absolutely vertical? I think that's the way 5twins is, but he made it that way. I think there is roughly a 2'' height difference in the mounting holes on the motor, and 5t angled his bracket to accommodate that, I'm guessing so the cylinders are vertical.

So here's what's messing me up. Since I now have chemo brain I have a hard time with abstract thought. I have a hard time figuring certain things out. Math really messes me up. And I used to be good at it. I can not decide if the rotating points on this K&L need to be inline with each other like shown in all the pics I've seen. If one side is 2'' lower, is it still going to rotate? Or is it going to bind up? This is just blowing my chemo mind,,,lol. I think it will still work.

I guess if it binds up I'll make them even and just have the engine tilted a little. Or maybe come up with some kind of fix for it, like an angle bracket like 5t's.

I know. I'm over thinking it,,,lol.

I think this is going to work pretty slick withe a 650 on it. I'll report back once I get it.

Our own Travis makes these brackets that adapt to an automotive style hoist.

I've got this style, only works if you have an auto engine stand, and you can't split the cases on it.

@willis
Thanks for posting that link. I had looked at those several years ago and couldn't remember where I seen it until I saw your post. I have read here somewhere that you can flip the engine upside down, support the front top case half, remove the bottom mounting bolt and lift the bottom case.
And to top it off Travis makes the perfect mounting tabs for mounting the engine in my Muttley project. When I looked at the order confirmation e-mail from Travis , the message before it was a ad from HF advertising their roll around engine stand. Providence.
