I’ve owned this really nice 1977 XS650 for over 20 years. It’s been a wonderful second bike to my collection of sport bikes. Some time ago it began having issues with the charging system. In spite of much research and effort, I’ve been unable to accurately diagnose the problem, so I have since replaced all the parts I could with new….rotor, brushes, stator and a modern, combined regulator/rectifier. It still won’t charge, and I’m giving up.

It’s highly likely my work is to blame, so if you have the electrical chops, this could be a steal. Thanks for checking it out.

It's a shame you didn't ask and use this forum. With the wealth of info the members on here have and their genuine interest in helping I'm sure the problem would have been sorted, with the added bonus of saving you $'s.
Buying all new charging parts and an aftermarket SS reg/rect often will not help due to the quality of these parts.

Anyways good luck on the sale.

Actually, I did use this forum and had several people send suggestions. People on this forum love these bikes which is why I’m offering it up here to someone better with electrics than me. All the replacement parts are OEM with the exception of the reg/rect which was recommended by Mike’s XS as far superior to the stock units. I appreciate your input.

I believe we all have these moments Thinking about opening the tank cap drop down a burning match
But after leaving it for a while ,New energy and fresh Thoughts enters and it is solved.
And give satisfaction
Electrics is different .But as Mr Skull says .We are mostly if not always able to solve it.
Some pictures and some measurements perhaps a regulator and rectifier a ca $ 40 --$ 60
and it is fixed.
Having owned it so long there is a risk regrets comes if sold.

I was going off your Nov 24, 2 previous posts on here before today.

"I have since replaced all the parts I could with new….rotor, brushes, stator and a modern, combined regulator/rectifier"

Jim, (who rewinds factory Rotor), found, ( posted pics), Mike'sXS, and aftermarket Chinese rotors have very thin copper plating, very thin, this causes fluctuations and problems with the charging system.
Some....Aftermarket SS reg/rect have charging issues where the reg part is not controlling the output to a steady max of 14.5. some are more, causing overcharging meaning the rotor is not getting a rest and can burn out, (as well as battery damage), and some are less meaning the battery keeps going flat, hard starting, poor voltage to coils/points.

Staters are very rarely the problem. On the odd occasion it can be a broken wire but this component is so seldom the problem you could bet money on it and win 99 times out of 100.

I'm not arguing, you made up your mind, go for it.
Just pointing out your solution caused by frustration may not have been necessacery

Hey all, I much appreciate the positive feedback and helpful recommendations. I wish I had the electrical know how to properly diagnose these parts. I likely made a mistake changing out parts unnecessarily, but I hoped it would solve the problem. It didn’t, and I’m not sure how to go back. Anyway, if anyone knows of someone who might be interested in it, I’m flexible on price. Thanks!

I’ve been creeping for a long time. I’m now at a place in life that I can put the time into building a bike. I’m real! A little late but I’m here.
Altizzy, love your avatar!!
Because this was your first comment on the forum, you got stuck in approval queue purgatory. And since you're posting in the classified, your second post doesn't count either... so I had to approve you all over again. Do us all a favor and post something here. Then when we approve it, it'll be permanent and you'll be sprung from purgatory. Thanks... and a belated welcome to the forum!!

Such a shame to give up on a nice machine like yours.

My XS650 called Taffy took two years of frustrating investigation with the forum support to sort an electrical issue; TWO YEARS!
Many times I wanted to sell it and walk away; but the guys here kept persuading me to stick it out.
I now have a bike running and riding that Im proud to have managed to get working well.

However I respect your decision and reasoning if you genuinely lack the time or experience.
No doubt someone will get a steal and get the bike working.
