Further to my question about imported Xs650s, I've been wondering what to expect insurance to be like on an import, in particular a modified (cafe racer)

Provided its registered in the UK and not modified, I can’t see a problem getting insured.
I have three ex USA bikes insured through Peter James insurance.
Modified is another kettle of fish, the insurers will want to know how, what, when, and where.
MOT is a necessary step also, goes in your favour as to the bikes credibility.
I suppose if you can get it registered, insurance isn’t a big worry.

I'll give a 2nd nod to Peter James. They specialise in older and modified bikes and offer agreed value cover. My three bikes are insured with them - the agreed value on Miss November, my XS650, which has been modified required me to send some recent pictures and an account of the work that has been done. Cost of cover went up this year but I think it's still reasonable at £202 for three bikes, fully comp, unlimited mileage, includes holiday cover throughout Europe, and with agreed value on one of the bikes.

Plus, I have found them down to earth and easy to deal with.

That's a good price! I'm not so worried about doing a cafe racer conversion on one if I won't struggle to get insured. So I could combine it with my Daytona insurance then?

Thinking out loud ..
Senior enthusiast that has put in many hours of work and maybe owned the vehicle + 20 years
chased parts ..
Do they ever have an insurance claim. ???
I know of one whose garage caught fire in an electrical installation
5- 8 bikes
One HD with 1000 miles on it one moto Guzzi from the 20 ies or thirties .
Well known as a serous man .
He was depressed as if his wife had died. The insurance company payed without hassles
But you cannot replace memories and the background.

Carol Nash (Dublin) don't give a toss what I've done to my bikes, but perhaps they'd like to know if I turbo one.
All they require is that they're roadworthy and well maintained.
I make sure I've got the extra cover for pulling the trailer on the GS though, just in case it gets left off by mistake.

Having dealt with insurance companies, taking my money when taking out the policy, then deciding there are mitigating sucumstances why they wont pay the amount i was insured for after a claim. Citing some obscure small print or just saying you over-insured the value.

I reserve the right to be sceptical. especially if a discussion on any change to a factory set up has not been done and written into the policy. Maybe if the accident doesn't involve another vehicle, whats 2 or 3 thousand $'s................if it involves a $100,000.00 car then that might trigger a small print search
